Greetings, fellow BAs in the Mountain forum. I'll be traveling to Westminster next week for a conference, and I'd like to know if you might have any suggestions for beer stores and breweries to visit. I'll be staying at the Westin and primarily plan to travel either on foot or public transportation, so suggestions local to that part of town would be greatly appreciated.
At first glance, it seems that most of the happening places will be in Boulder or Denver proper, which comes as little surprise. But perhaps there some bars/pubs and stores more local to me that I should not overlook. A search of Google Maps shows me Total Beverage, Westminster Liquors, Sam's Warehouse, Kiran's, and Casablanca Wine & Spirits. Would any of these stores in particular be worth a visit? As for places, I only see the Colorado Keg House right off the bat.
To be honest, I'd really like to make my way out to Avery. I'm a big fan of their beers, and we simply cannot get the bigger ones like Mephistopheles in Georgia because of our 14% ABV cap. I'm willing to take a cab or some other means, but only if I can make that trip very focused. But perhaps there are some other trips I should be considering.

I don't have a lot of free time in Colorado other than next Friday, but I'd like to make some stops, if possible. Thanks in advance to helping me to make the most of that time!

I live in S Denver so I'm not too sure of places in Westminster to recommend (sidebar, sorry you have to stay there... nothing wrong with it other than boring as hell haha)... but I will tell you that RTD, the local pub. transport, has a bus that runs up and down Highway 36 (the Boulder Turnpike, links Denver-Boulder), if you're looking to get to Avery/Boulder and/or places in Denver that's your best bet. It's reasonable and RTD has integrated with Google maps to make your planning easier... also their website isn't the worst... http://www.rtd-denver.com/GoogleTripPlanner.shtml

Like I said I'll defer actual Westminster/North Denver burbs places to someone on here who actually knows them. Good luck and welcome, have fun!

4 Noses, Odd 13, Gravity, Twelve Degrees and Echo and some breweries worth checking out farther North of Denver. Yak & Yeti for food and beer.

I live only a few minutes from there, so I will do my best. Total beverage is only a mile walk from your hotel and is definitely the best bet for bottles in that area. You can grab the BV bus about 200yds from the Westin, which can take you into the heart of Boulder or Denver. It's only a 20min ride from there into Denver and from there a 6-10min walk will take you to Great Divide, Wynkoop, River North and Falling Rock Taphouse (arguably the best beer bar in CO). If you want to o to Avery in Boulder, you are probably best off taking the BV into boulde and then grabbing a can the rest of the way. I can go on for hours, so just message me if you need more info.

    Best westminster options:
    Total beverage (cab or shuttle)
4 noses brewery (cab or shuttle)
Yak & yeti restaurant (cab or shuttle)
Bar Louie (across street from westin)

Feel free to hit me up as well.

A bit outside your area but if you are thinking of hitting up Avery I would suggest some thought about Big Choice (Broomfield), Odd 13 (Lafayette) and Liquid Mechanics (Lafayette).

Big Choice is pretty close by; I really like the Poblano Oatmeal Stout.

Total Beverage is the best place in the area for stores. 4 Noses is by far the best brewery in the area, a little further out Odd 13 is fantastic. There's a hockey rink with a bar above it right next to the Westin that I frequent for Blackhawks games- they usually have fantastic prices on a couple craft brews and the wait staff is a blast.

Thanks, everyone, for the information. I appreciate the brewery and store recommendations, especially the ones local to the area @Oxymoron, @belgbeerdrinker, @FarmerTed and @alexipa.

@djs467, I really appreciate the travel advice. This is precisely the sort of information I need. I'm fine with a split approach to travel--anything to cut down on the cost of a direct cab fare. I'll definitely look into using the BV. If I'm lucky, perhaps I'll be able to travel in both directions. I'm all about walking, so it's good to know that most breweries are within walking distance of one another.

Look forward to visiting next week. Cheers!

You may also wanna add Westminster Brewery and the Arvada Beer Company. I'm sure the Westin-just minutes from my abode-has shuttles that can get you close to these places. Check out the BA's 'nearby' part of the app...it'll map 'em all for you!

Just as an update, I managed to visit Avery and Upslope yesterday. Both were lots of fun, and I truly appreciate the taproom culture that we're missing in ATL. Loved Avery's taproom exclusives, including the wet hop pale ales and two variants of Out of Bounds (peppermint chocolate and coffee). Upslope was great, too, especially the bourbon barrel aged brown ale and a 16% ABV 2011 English-style barleywine. The barleywine was so amazing, I had to have a second pour.

Also went to Yak and Yeti in Arvada. Dinner was great, and so was the chai stout.

As for bottles, space was a premium. But at the local Total Beverage, I settled on two bottles of Tweak, Elevation Apis IV, Elevation False Summit, and and Epic Big Bad Baptist. Enjoyed lots of other great local beers while here. Thanks again for all your recommendations!

Best of all may have been my conversations with like-minded beer geeks.
