Question for BAs who might know: I've found that Traverse Brewing Company's Manitou Amber made the jump to Terra Firma, but are any other ales still made by other brewers, even under a different name?

Not sure, a lot of the former brewers at Traverse are still pretty active in the MI brewing scene.

I think it's rare that a brewer who was not the owner of a defunct brewery would have proprietary rights to a recipe for old beers to show up somewhere else, especially a Manitou Amber which I don't recall as being anything special. That being said, I'm waiting to see if Sam Sherwood, who is now at Right Brain, will brew Malted Milk Ball Porter for which he owns the recipe that I think he developed at either Waldorff or Perrin.

Iirc, Terra Firma purchased the recipe, or rights to it, from someone associated with GTB. I believe they purchased all of the recipes, and the amber is the only one they've produced for distribution. Could be wrong on all of that though...

Cool, thanks for the replies. I've recently been doing some reading on recent brewing history (oxymoron?), and listing to some interviews and Traverse Brewing keeps coming up, since John Niedermaier (Terra Firma), Sam Sherwood and Russ Springsteen (Right Brain), and Joe Short (uh, Short's) all brewed there. Jack Archiable himself is at Short's.

I just thought it'd be pretty sweet to get my hands on some of the ales from the godfather of Northern Michigan Breweries.

@psykosis is correct, heard it from the man himself yesterday. Terra Firma bought all the recipes. The twist is, per Jack, that the Manitou Amber they make uses not only a different malt but a different yeast. Kinda makes it a different ale in my opinion.
