I believe that Tre Fontane would be the 12th Trappist brewery recognized. There were the long standing seven (Westvleteren, Orval, Westmalle, Rochefort, Achel, Chimay and Konigshoeven/La Trappe). Then Mont des Cats, Stift Engelszell, Zundert, Spencer (only US). Now Tre Fontane.

Edit: From the International Trappist website:
    >>>"A Trappist beer is not the same as an Abbey beer
Of all the beers in the world, only twelve may carry the name “Trappist”: the beers of Achel, Chimay, La Trappe, Orval, Mont des Cats, Rochefort, Westvleteren, Westmalle, Mont des Cats Stift Engelszell, Zundert (NL), Spencer (USA) and Tre Fontane (IT).

    The "Authentic Trappist Product" label
Eleven Trappist beers carry the ATP-label : the beers of Achel, Chimay, La Trappe, Orval, Rochefort, Westvleteren, Westmalle, and the beers of Stift Engelszell (Gregorius and Benno), Zundert (NL), Spencer (USA) and Tre Fontane (IT)."<<<

So I'm not sure if it is actually 12 or only 11. "Twelve may carry the name 'Trappist..." but "Eleven Trappist beers carry the ATP-label.."

So, is there some difference between brewing a Trappist beer and carrying the ATP label?

It is 11. Mont des Cats does not count because their beer is made at Chimay, and not within their own walls.

This new Italian trappist exits already for a couple of years, but it was not brewed inside the abbey. Since the beginning of this year Tre Fontane built its own microbrewery inside the abbey and became member of the ATP-family. At the start of this month their beer got ATP-approved, so now it's an official Trappist beer WITH ATP-label.

Does "Trappist" mean anything useful as far as the quality of the beer is concerned? Personally, I don't give a shit what religion the brewers are.

Not directly, but I have yet to have a bad Trappist.
I have not had this particular one.
