To the people that go stand in line at a production facility to by packaged beer to go, spot on.

However...I think the numbers might still skew towards those more "boring" beer styles as a whole, even within the craft beer community. We just don't readily see it in our uberhypergeeky microcosm.

I drink way more lagers/pilsners than IPAs these days after drinking mostly NEIPA for a couple years and I know a lot of other people that do to.

I’d personally care more if they had a real, non-ticketed, non-shit-show experience available at their brewery that made it fun to hang out there. At that point having some beers that are clean and easy to drink would be wonderful. When I’m making the trek for some haze, it doesn’t move the needle for me to also get a few cans of ok brown ale.

Give me a hefe as good as Urban Chestnut makes and I’d walk out with a case.

For the first 15 bites you'll think its gum then it disintegrates in your mouth.

Nah. Let’s keep hazebro’s separate from the full craft beer community.

Not sure how you could compare the two. One makes one good style and the other does three or four, including way more complex beers. Tree House is great for NEIPAs, anything else?

I was just layering snark on snark. They’re both world class breweries and in very different ways (and as you say, with very different focuses).

Forgot the jackfruit farm, mango hi-chew imports and the rt-20 expansion (maybe that is under cartel fees). Haha!

    Riffing:

Their bread is buttered off their pales. That’s how they came to existence, that is what they do best and that is what makes them $$$$$$$$$$$. So, I am sure they have insane hop contracts at this juncture. Meaning, they have mounds and mounds of hops to use. From an up and coming brewery, that sounds fantastic. But those suckers are expensive and don’t store long and I can’t imagine they are easy to then just move off your hands if you don’t want to use them. Hence the last forever number curiosities being DIPAs. They aren’t curious, they just want to sell the shit-ton of hops they are contracted to buy.

Also, pales are quick turn - taking up less time in fermenters and pushing out product like clockwork. Mix in some milk stouts (lactose introduced to make up for mouthfeel that would otherwise be achieved by longer production times) and you have another “go-to”. So, surprise - it’s business. The good thing is the pale ales are sublime (for the most part). I personally can’t stand the milk stouts anymore, but eventually once they expand into oblivion we will see the ‘other’ styles pour in.

I’m going go say this is a nope and nope, the usage of hops from a seasonal harvest last well into the next couple of years. Properly stored hop pellets will last for up to 4 years. Tree House is not using 4 year old hops though, because based on the eye test, they know how to run a business and have proper supply controls. So, they are not contracted to have an over abundance of product they do not need to use. To your other nope, I can assure you that if a brewery had a sizable surplus of hops they did not want to use, there is a market to divest that product.

Nope and nope...lol. We are talking about TH and TH would never use 4 year old hops in a pale...I’ve also never seen 4 year old hops for sale at my local hb shop. Maybe there is a market for excess hops, but I guarantee it is not as lucrative to TH as just printing a new curiosity label and dumping the hops there. They do obviously run a wildly successful business, so I am sure it is all planned. Supply control is making 80%-90% of their beer pales right now and that’s the point.

I’m not stating facts, just giving opinions around why the vast majority of their beer is pales as to some previous posts around the topic. It’s not profound or anything, maybe I am off base. But the good thing is, TH appears to be relentless in their expansion plans and I am sure we will see some more balance with other styles soon. Possibly a petting zoo as well.

There is (are?) a market(s) for hops. One such example - Lupulin Exchange. I would agree that it is probably more profitable for them to just use the hops and make beer. I also wonder, since they do have direct relationships with the supplier, whether they have some kind of agreement not to resell the hops or there is a disincentive to sell the hops (since Galaxy can go for upwards of $45/lb, there would definitely be a financial incentive if they can sell at market). Perhaps reselling would hurt their relationship with the supplier to get the same amount of hops or at least preference when it comes to selecting hop lots? Or they would have to sell at the rate they bought them at without any carrying costs factored in?

This is all speculation, but that's what this thread is for, right?

Strong statement on a market you literally didn't know existed one post back.
