hey everyone—long time lurker, first time poster. Heading up to Boston this weekend and was able to get the family to have one brewery day (with them). Will be wife, mother in law, father in law and me.

Either going to hit up Treehouse or Trillium (Canton)—how crazy will both be this weekend and which would be a more “fun” time for everyone? I really have no knowledge of how long lines take on Saturday at Treehouse or if they have big lines at Trillium. Anyone have any tips for which would be a more fun day for everyone? Looking to pick up some cans and have a few beers.

    Thanks!

I would say Trillium is going to be your easier route. If you are actually staying in Boston then Trillium in Canton will be half the drive of Treehouse and you just never know what the line will be like at Treehouse. Why not have some beer on the green and just grab cans at Trillium in Fort Point? You can literally be in and out of there in 5 minutes, plus you can then enjoy the other Boston options.

Yep if you are staying in Boston your best bet is definitely cans at Fort Point then bring the family to the Trillium Greenway for drafts.

Going to be hot out but at least you will very close to the water and in Boston.

I can say that a family trip to Canton would not be your best option as it is 100% about beer. It is in an office park. The Fort Point/Greenway solution is a very good one. Can you convince them to have lunch at Row 34 also? They have superb allocations to some NE beers as well as some global offerings that are unmatched in Boston, at least for a restaurant. It is a few steps away from Trillium cans. If it is going to be super hot, the Treehouse line may cause a divorce.

Thanks everyone for the tips. Staying in Maynard, so about the same distance to Canton and Treehouse. So those are the two options...will definitely stop by Fort Point if we are in the city, but not planning to be right now.

    Just a few follow ups:
What could we expect time wise for lines at Tree House this Saturday? I don’t really have a base line.

Are there any cool places to eat/drink beer near Trillium Canton?

Would there be any other brewery or beer garden outside the city that would be better than these two? The whole family does really enjoy NEIPAs, but just might be wary of big lines at the breweries.

I really appreciate the help everyone, thank you so much!

    Sunday Sunday SUNDAY!

See JC the grain smasher Tetriault square off in the cage against his arch nemesis. Nate the Snake Lanier in a no holds barred, everything goes, beer foam pit cage match.

See your two faves duke it out for customer supremacy as we finally will crown the top of the hop. There will be eye gouging, foam throwing, biting, and maybe dean will interrupt the match, only way to find out is to tune in Sunday Sunday SUNDAY!

On a busy Saturday you could be looking at an hour wait at Treehouse. That being said, it is beautiful and you spend that time waiting outside. Don't go to Canton. Its in an office park and unless everyone in your group is a huge beer nerd and really excited about Trillium, they will not enjoy themselves.

Neither one of these locations could even remotely be considered a family destination, especially with your mother- and father-in-law. In fact, I get the shivers just thinking about it.

If you just want cans of beer, leave the family at home and go to Trillium - the drive is roughly the same time but you will spend an hour less standing in line. You'll be back in under two hours. They'll hardly even know you were gone.

Then bring your cans back, put them in the fridge, and take your family to Jack's Abby.

If there's a limited bottle release at Trillium on Saturday then you could easily be looking at an hour+ line as well, thought the line usually drops off to almost nothing after the first 2 hours or so. An hour Tree House line has a better chance of staying long IMO depending on what's available that day.

Honestly the Canton patio isn't a terrible spot (sure beats inside the taproom) but like others have mentioned there's only so much you can do to make a cool outdoor space in an industrial park, and both the patio and interior are likely to be way more congested than Tree House. Both breweries don't have anything else to do/see within walking distance, but Tree House is the more scenic spot and I'd certainly wager more seating.

I would hit trillium. Most likely much better line situation. You can get more than a pint or two if you want. And while it may be in an office park I really like the atmosphere there, plus they have the outside patio area now.

Treehouse you will be spending a lot of time in line.

Go to Fort Point. The biggest downside is you might not be able to find Trillium pours (you probably can though). The upside is everything else.

If you're truly averse to going into the city (there's really no reason to be, it's an easy drive and a great neighborhood), Jack's Abby in Framingham has lots of good beer (especially if you're into lagers) and fantastic food. No lines to wait in, but it is communal seating so if you go during peak hours it might take a bit to find space to sit. They'll serve you while you wait, though.

Hit either during the day and go to Hudson that night. You can grab food from the Rail Trail and enjoy it at Medusa for a great variety of beers. Nice option for a mature party of people.

New City Microcreamery is a good option for dessert and a nightcap. Small speakeasy there too.

Trillium Canton's patio is not a bad spot. I was there this past Saturday and there were a bunch of families hanging out. I arrived 5 minutes before open and there was no line for either cans or pours. You can get pours inside or at the patio bar. They had a food truck if you get hungry.

That being said, the Greenway Garden location is a nicer spot to sit around. If you want cans and to hang out and have a few beers I would say Canton, but if you just want to have a few beers the Greenway spot would be best.

My experiences at Tree House have been traffic, lines, more traffic but I am sure it is more pleasant if they are doing draft pours.

This is the suggestion I would go with, especially considering it could be 95 degrees.

Ummm... no! Pour line likely near an hour and with pours available, that will keep the can line banging on an hour as well. Plus a "holiday" w/e (I am aware the 4th is on Weds., but that makes both this and next weekend high travel days). I smell huge crowds at Trade House. Hell, a here may still be some Anniversary drafts on for pours this w/e. Great for drinking, not so much with the in (out)-laws in tow.

Trillium hinted they have a few more "surprises" left this week after tomorrows Gose release. Sat could be quite busy for Trill as well, something to keep an eye on at least.
W/E before July 4th is likely to be busy regardless, good luck with what ever you choose.

    I'll add my two cents.

Your concerns about lines is real, however if you're flexible on when you arrive, you shouldn't have an issue at either Trillium or Tree House. From open until mid afternoon, expect big crowds at both breweries, but by 4-5pm things tend to start thinning out. I stopped at TH a month ago around 4pm on a "busy Saturday" and only waited 20-minutes for cans, and 10-minutes for pours.

For a group including kids, Tree House is by far the better experience, if for no other reason than you've got tons of green space for them to run around, lots of communal picnic tables, and plenty of Adirondack chairs. Trillium's new patio is nice, but it's not anywhere close to the space of Tree House.

Quick note - TH limits each person to 2 drink tickets (2 full or 4 half pours... or some combo). You can purchase drink tickets at the concierge booth right inside the front door, or while you're buying cans. HOWEVER, last call at Tree House is 6:30pm, and at 6pm they cut the drink ticket limit to 1pp, so if you're going later in the day keep that in mind.

    Enjoy your weekend!

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate the help-way more responses and insights than I could have imagined.

I’ll let everyone know how it goes—leaning towards risking it all at Treehouse

This guy gets it. Get the cans at Trillium. Then take the family to Jacks Abby/Springdale. Even non-beer drinkers love that place. Great beer & food at JA & Springdale has a killer taproom with all kinds of games & stuff. They're even in the same building to make it easy for you. And frankly, Springdale has been putting out some damn fine hoppy beers these days as well.
