I had a cherry sour from wooden robot not too long ago and it was top notch. I would agree with all the others except WW. I choose not to support them. The few sours I have had from Zebulon have been really good. Hopefully we see some more from them this year. I have yet to try barrel culture.

Maybe I just am sensitive to it, most FF beers taste like they have an off flavor from their souring process, (likely acetobacter or similar). Beers from them that have been very strong in that regard have been Brutus, Rhythm Rug and Frut Lups. Some people I have talked to really seem to enjoy that flavor though, so  whatever works!

Cant agree with this top 5 at all. I mean Wicked Weed? They are not event relevant in the craft game anymore. Zebulon is getting these, but not yet. FF is too funky IMO...not enough variety.

I mean I don’t really buy Wicked Weed beers anymore, but it’s not like their beers just all of a sudden started tasting worse. Their sour program is older and more extensive than most and they have made some good ones (and some bad ones). They might not be relevant in the “craft game,” but they still have a thriving dedicated sour-only facility in Asheville which is more than most can say.

If you took WW, FF, and Zebulon out then who would you replace them with?

I hope this is still floating around in a few weeks on draft. My sister is coming to town and was thinking of taking her.

WW quality is indeed slipping. I obviously feel Barrel Culture it top for sours. Green man is up there. And Burial stays near the top.

Gotcha. I did have Burial in my top 5 though, so you’d still be missing a 5th.

I can see an argument for Green Man, but I just think since Mike is at Zebulon now you gotta give them the nod. Framboze and the Mixed Berry sour were both better than any sour Green Man has done IMO.

Green Man? When's the last time Green Man successfully put out a sour? At this point they're maybe getting one a year out now? Hell, at that pace, Natty Green's is a better sour brewery than Green Man as American Sour is pretty darn awesome.

I feel dumber for having read that. Is that a lampooining of the Barrel Culture marketing style (which I haven't paid attention to at all)?

You mean the beer that has become Upland sour level and actually went to distro because no one went to the release this year?

Perhaps you should try it. You may figure out that TASTE actually plays a big role when discussing how good a beer is.

If you take those three out, I don't think there would be a top 5 sour producers in NC .

I get the hate on WW, but they do make some solid sours.
Zebulon is coming into his own in regards to sours, I feel Mike is similar to the folks at FF, he wants to do 'his' thing, and not just the same riffs of sours he was doing at Greenman.

I'd throw in High-Wire, they have been making some cool sours, and even ones like Pink Drink are pretty darn delicious.

Hi-Wire landed one inside the top 20 in a 2017 Paste Magazine blind taste ranking of 150 sours.

This is one way to get on someone's Ignore list. Reminds me of Jamie Kennedy's "Malibu's Most Wanted".

I haven't heard of Bootsie, but I've heard of Bootsy. Is that what you're referring to. I've heard of, have had, and have had bottles of Bootsy, Snozzberry, and Maceo. As I said, when was the last time Green Man SUCCESSFULLY put out a sour? Snozzberry was infected and never released in 2017. Green Man definitely proved in 2017 that Mike was what was driving their sour program and they haven't really figured out how to brew an awesome sour since he left.

But hey, keep on assuming that people on a BEER website don't know anything about beer from their local area.

Just had Game Over Black razz. One of best sours I’ve had. I love sours but I’m a sucker for the fruit bombs. Tasted like a melted slushee
