Tried Barrel Culture ?

As someone who has only been able to get BC via trade market as I'm in Texas, I love them. I wouldn't call them the best sours on the market due to the fact that they have a couple that are almost undrinkable. The Triple Atomic was almost a drain pour due to it's pucker but that's the only one I've had from them that was just hard to handle. That being said, 50 Carat Vanilla Razz was amazing, I had a Fearless version last night that was delicious.

My complaint is the lack of barrel flavor on any of their beers outside of the Fearless I had. I'm guessing that has to do with the quickness that they make and release these beers so the time in the barrel isn't as long as other breweries? Either way, I've got about 14 to drink now and can't wait to try them all.

 

NC-based Facebook groups are melting down over DDB giving one of their beers a bad review, it's pretty hilarious.

 

Finally got to try them as they were available in Charlotte last weekend at Brawleys with Game Over Black & Blue. Pretty solid stuff. Looking forward to trying to get my hands on more of them going forward.

 

Yeah, its DDB, the guy hates fruited sours in general and loves giving drawn out terrible reviews. I love the popcorn it generates.

Personally, I am super happy to have a place doing fruited sours down the road from me, and I don't have to trade at all.

 

In general I agree with DDB review. I don't get the hype and taste of this brewery. I have been saying it all along. The defense of this place by the NC groups is REAL. lol.

 

DDB is obviously always hyperbole to the max, but in general I find his overall conclusions to be pretty accurate. It’s unfortunate that the one he reviewed was one of BC’s worst beers to date, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.

 

I’ve yet to have one of their beers that really blows my socks off. But I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve had and it’s a fun place to get a beer or two if you can sit in the barrel room.

I guess I’m perplexed by the hype, Hell I have been since before they opened. People were saying that THIS was going to be the brewery to put the triangle on the map.

 

That's not really true at all though. I don't know where you get that he hates fruited sours, he gives positive reviews for them very frequently. And its actually pretty uncommon for him to post a negative review these days, if you look back through all his recent content its overwhelmingly positive, to the point that its kind of boring now.

The BC bottle he reviewed (Game Over) happens to be the only one I've had, and while I didn't think it was as horrible as he did, I couldn't finish the pour my friend gave me.

 

I can understand disagreeing with it, but are you saying he posted the review without having actually drank the beer? For what purpose?

 

I doubt DDB cares about trade value. He clearly has a thorn in his side about hype. Barrel Culture has released a couple of misses. I thought Passionfruit Guava was a miss.

I think Barrel Culture has also hit a few home runs and a few doubles. The Game Over Citra Simcoe was well executed and beers like 50 Carats Razz Vanilla and Summer Jam Double Blueberry were brilliant. Something tells me that Barrel Culture is going to stick around and release more home runs than pop ups.

Up thread and early on in this discussion I called out the popsicle sours as silly, just not my thing. I didn't like Game Over Passionfruit Guava either, but not for the same reasons. I thought the Game Over Passionfruit Guava lacked the red wine barrel characteristics that are present in most of their beers and I thought the base beer was too young, but certainly not crippling.

DDB's review lacked any balance. He did exactly what Barrel Culture is doing, competing for attention in a hyper saturated market.

 

I think this is spot on minus the last DDB part. I expect no less than 3 consults to a dictionary when reading the adjectives in his reviews. Hyperbole is just his shtick.

PFG had a terrible aroma but the citra simcoe I had side by side was really well done. I would expect a little inconsistency with being so young of a brewery with the beers they focus on. Some ups, some downs. If you read through the Instagram comments, even DDB says he hopes to give them another shot.

People taking it almost personal is kinda crazy to me. It’s one beer, one review. Let’s not go overboard thinking the hype train is going off the tracks.

 

LOl! I have had plenty. Including the one DDB reviewed, and game over citra/simcoe. The beer is just not wel made IMO. And DDB doesn’t really need to manipulate the trade value since he is thrown plenty of beer without even requesting it.

 

Looks like they're doing a NE IPA. Will be interested to try that.

Anyone know why the brewpub will be closed today (6/27)? I know that they had the Weldwerks fest last week but I got the sense from their FB post that they may be having some sort of facility issue at the brewpub.
