So I'm not the first BA to admit that I'm living in the sweet spot of juicy, NE, tropical IPA's. That said, I love Tree House, Bissell, Foundatation, Alchemist, MBC, Foley, NEBCO, et. al... I've had 4 of these world class beers tonight.......but I always gravitate to Trillium. Hill Farmstead, who? Just thought I'd start a midnight, drunkin' fight......Go.

but actually to me its treehouse/hf/trillium (in that order, IPA only). i for sure love trillium stuff but overall i can honestly say i've never had a treehouse ipa that i thought was less than world class. HF for the most part same way, and trillium only in "last" of the three because i've had a couple IPAs from them i didn't love. obviously subjective and i still love trill's stuff, but i think overall portfolio wise treehouse/HF are a bit ahead of trillium

either way the fact that this is a conversation makes me so happy. so many good choices.

My question, after reading this is; do we over use the term world class when discussing hoppy beers?

Trillium is my personal #1. I'm moslty into hoppy stuff and I don't think anyone compares. HF is very good too, but frankly I think Tree House is a step back. Still a top #10 in the country but I think selling their beers so 'young' hurts. Even an IPA should sit for a week.

Never had Trillium. Heady Topper #1 for me, just nothing tastes like it- that first can makes me feel like a little beer kid. Julius #2, Sip Of Sunshine #3. Hill Farmstead is solid, and though I've never had Abner (and that is significant) has just never wowed me.

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I'll take Epiphany & SOS over all of them. Only had HT once & it was a 3 month old can so I'd like to try a fresher one before passing judgement but I thought it was overrated. Still really good though. Also have still not had trillium. I tell my wife all the time, New England has the best beer in the country (sorry West coast). Even the second level beer here (night shift, JA, stone face, etc) is still killer.

I think congress street is probably my perfect beer. Treehouse is amazing in its own right, but I tend to agree w @edallolie that their beers are a bit raw tasting off the line. Nothing wrong w that their demand speaks for itself. Alchemist is right there and I personally think HF is a step back, however, I haven't tried the most coveted of their beers.

If either TH or Trillium could put out 14/15$ 4packs of tall boys it would be game set match for me

I don't know that any of these hoppy beers are a full step back or sub par, though my personaly favorites are Treehouse Green and Trillium Congress Street, guess that just means that I love Galaxy hops and the mouth feel that these breweries have nailed.

I "think" i prefer Trillium beers over Tree House, but find myself driving to TH much more often because of the beer format, and the fact that their beer is half the price of Trillium. They are so close in quality and taste to me, but if I can get twice as much beer for the same price, its an easy decision, most of the time....

I guess its great for us that these are the tough beer decisions we have to make!

In what alternate reality do you live in that TH is half the price of trillium?

    this one......

Julius is $3.75 a 16oz can... 23 cents an ounce
Any DDH Trillium beer $12.00 a 25 oz bottle... 48 cents an ounce

    Simple math.....

Depending on format it varies but Tree House is generally cheaper. Tree House sells a 16 oz can of IPA for ~$3.50, or 22 cents per oz. while Trillium sells a 24 oz bottle of IPA for ~$10, or 42 cents per oz. Pretty similar ratio for DIPA (King Julius is 28 cents per oz., a Trillium DIPA is usually 50 cents per oz.

Wouldn't the fair comparison be congress street though? DDH would correspond with Haze. Still comes out in favor of TH, just not as heavily.

Same here. The juicy hop profile that JC has perfected has me looking for it in every pale/IPA/DIPA. I've been getting a case of 25's every two to 3 weeks for the better part of a year now. Drinking most and trading/giving away a fair amount. The pace really picked up this past year when HF went through their growing pains w the new brewhouse. I couldn't believe how off some of their stallwert beers were (Edward and Susan just totally different beers). HF was the king of juicy IPAs for me -- but the 3 hr drive every other month suddenly was made obsolete w/ the 2015 fall off and w/the variety being offered 10 minutes from my work on Congress st. I like most of the other NE Brewers hoppy beers mentioned above -- but that signature Trill juiciness hasn't been replicated yet anywhere at least for my palate.

Well since TH doesn't offer bottles and Trillium doesn't offer cans, it would be more fair to compare growlers.

Looking at Green which is $8 for 750ml = 31 cents an ounce
Looking at Congress Street @ $10 for 32oz = 31 cents an ounce

So yeah, when you cherry pick the numbers TH is half price, but when you compare similar beers in similar formats they are exactly the same.

I don't totally agree with that either though. Just because you get a bulk discount at Trillium doesn't mean it's actually cheaper. If I go to a Bruins game a 16oz pour of swill is going to cost me as much as a bottle of Trillium, doesn't really make Trillium cheaper than Bud Lite.

I think the point is that TH offers the cheaper format. So while yes, you CAN purchase an $8 growler, you often have the opportunity to get the beer cheaper, which Trillium doesn't offer.

fair point, not gonna lie I didn't realize TH was that much cheaper when I made my first comment.

According to TH's website right now they have zero beer for sale. Cheap or not I can walk in and out of Trillium in minutes most of the time with whatever I want.

I live equidistant from each brewery. I prefer Treehouse for price, convenience, and road traffic. Taste? It's splitting hairs.
