Okay, so I have a trip coming up to the San Francisco bay area. It will most likely be at the end of January. I will be there for about a week (mainly business), and want to make it count. So, I have several questions that I was hoping you guys and gals could help me with. Please answer as much as you can, like I said, I really want to make it count as this does not happen often.

    1. What beers should I keep my eyes open for that are on tap? (since I live in the midwest, I want to focus on rare/unique/regional brews)
    2. What are some great bars to hit in San Francisco or the Alameda CA area?
    3. What beer should I look out for in bottle form? (I plan to take a couple back home with me if possible)
    4. Where are the best places to go to pick up these bottled beers?

*Now please keep in mind, I will not be able to travel far at all from the San Francisco/Alameda area.
*Also, the only one I already know I want to look for is Pliny the Elder. I have no idea where to find it on tap or by bottle though.

I appreciate any and all help I can get with this!

Toronado in the Lower Haight usually has Pliny of tap.

    Other bars/bottle shops/breweries to consider:

    CellarMaker (Brewery in SOMA)
City Beer Store (Bottle shop/bar in SOMA)
Mikkeller Bar SF (Bar in Tenderloin)
The Rare Barrel in Berkeley (Brewery/Bar)

If you make it nowhere else please go to rare barrel. A trip to anchor is also cool. And see the short list above. You should be able to find some pliney if you have your heart set on it. Word of advice, go to a brewery and ask them what the best beer bars are in the city, there are a few hidden gems that didn't exist when I lived up there.

Ps I will either be up end of January or early February if you just want to hitch a ride up to Santa Rosa one afternoon.

If you're in Alameda, you should consider Oakland - Trappist, The Good Hop, Trappist Provisions, Barclays (usually has Pliny or Blind Pig on tap).

    And always: http://beerbybart.com/

If you have any extra time, go to Sante Adairius in Capitola (basically Santa Cruz). Excellent beers on tap, and a bottle for sale is more likely these days. Just bring a bottle to share and you will have an amazing time, it is always basically one giant share.

Awesome! These are definitely going on my list! Is it fairly easy to find Pliny by the bottle in the San Francisco area? I want to try and take a couple with me, but not really sure how hard it will be to get.

Unfortunately I won't be able to get away for that long, or I would absolutely take you up on this. Thank you for the offer!
Sadly this trip is mainly business with hopefully a few moments to fit in some fun. I will have to remain very close to San Francisco, Alameda, and Oakland.

While I did search to see what was out there, I was looking more for opinions and favorites. Things that the search alone can not provide.

Huge help! Thank you! Most of my time will be in Alameda, so I will definitely check these out!

Sadly I will not be able to get this far away to check it out on this trip, but this is something I will definitely keep in mind for the future, if I get back here again. Thank you!

It's an easy area to enjoy some good beer.... I don't know how easy it is to get Pliny in the bottle because I usually just get it up at the brewery. I just bought a bottle down here in so cal so I've gotta assume the shops in the city will have it as frequently as we do down here.

Use Facebook and Instagram leading up to your trip as well. Shops love to post and brag about what came in. I'll keep a look out when I am up there as well. I'm there for 75% work, 25% alcohol haha

Sounds great, I will definitely do that. I appreciate all the help. I wanted to start my planning now since I just had it confirmed yesterday that the trip was happening. I want to make sure I plan it out well ahead of time, it's not often I find myself on the west coast.

That is about how this trip will be; 60% work, 20% site seeing, 20% beer. I have to squeeze as much as I can out of that 20% beer! lol

It is not easy to get Pliny in bottles...pretty much sells out within a few hours of delivery everywhere so unless you know when and where and can get out of work in the middle of the business day, it's not likely to happen. It's very easy to on draft, though.

Also, since you'll be in Alameda, check out Faction. They make great hoppy beers and I'm told the location is really cool, but haven't got out there yet. They might have limited hours, though.

2nd for Faction and St. George spirits is right next door. Lucky 13 is in Alameda and they usually have Pliny and Blind Pig on. Mcgees is also down the street and they are the same. If you're looking for bottles, Encinal market has a great selection and always has Beachwood bottles in stock which doesn't happen in Northern California.

Your best bet at getting Pliny bottles is to set up an IP trade. Pliny sells out quickly, and if you do find some there's a good chance you'll be limited to 1-2 bottles.

I don't know why I did not include these on my original response, but other bottle shops to consider are:

Healthy Spirits (shops in the Castro and Richmond)
    http://healthy-spirits.blogspot.com/?m=1

    Ales Unlimited (Pacific Heights)
