If only 4 then AZ Wilderness, Four Peaks, Huss and Sun Up. I would respectfully disagree 100% about going to Desert Eagle and Sleepy Dog is hit or miss.

Figured I could piggyback off this thread instead of posting a new thread. I'll be in Mesa next Thursday through Sunday. Not going to have a lot of time to shop, but was looking for some local stuff to look out for, plus any restaurants or stores in the area that have a good-to-great selection (Firestone, Ballast Point, etc.). Thanks!

In Mesa Sun Devil Liquor will be your best bet but Tops in Tempe, Papago in Scottsdale and Gilbert Conveinient Mart in Gilbert are all relatively close by with the same selections and Papago and Tops have better draft selections while you shop and will be doing promos while you are in town. Check out http://arizonabeerweek.com/ for a list of some of the killer events going on. My picks: Thursday is a tough day to choose, Colorado Firkin takeover at Flannys, barrel aged beers at World of beers, Avery cellared beers and cheese pairing at Papago. Friday Hungry Monks Bell's event will be the best, Saturday beer brunch at OHSO.

I'm going to be in AZ the end of April. Going to be limited time, and I don't yet know exactly how much time and transportation I'll have. Going to be looking for things to bring back, also probably won't have a lot of space...

Does anyone know if there is a public trans system to get you to any of these breweries?

Yes, Light rail is easy for Sun Up, Tops and Four Peaks. and light rail combined with buses for Papago, Fate, and AZ Wilderness is easy for one bus with no transfers with a light rail trip as they are on major streets with express bus connections.

One last question, where are the best places for growler fills? In Chicago we don't get too many opportunities until it's at an actual brewery. I see that some regular bars will fill a growler.

    Yep, growlers fills anywhere from
Gas stations/car washes, restaurants, brew pubs/bars, breweries and liquor stores in Arizona. They will fill any glass growler as long as it is clean and has the government warning label on it. Or, you can always purchase their branded one on site.

As for places just depends on what you are looking for. You can always call for current tap list if you want. Sun Devil or Tops liquor, Papago, House of Brew, World of Beer, GCM, City Wine and Spirits, Whole Foods...especially in Chandler, all breweries. These are just a small sample of fill places. Just depends one what you are looking for really.

If you are looking for something specific on tap shoot me a message. Or for anything else too. Don't mind helping you out at all.

Oh, I also can't recommend enough to grab at least a sixer of Knotty Pine pale ale from Lumberyard brewery out of Flagstaff AZ. You may be able to find it on tap around the Phoenix area also. Amazing beer.....gold medal winner also.

is there a list somewhere that list this places? I'm coming from the OC on Saturday to Phoenix for the gun show and heading back home and if I can get a growler fill or three (hehe) with some of my own growlers (stupid CA) that would rock!

Look at the BA directory if you want a list. Basically everyplace around including gas stations, some of the convenience stores, some grocery stores, some liquor stores and all the craft beer bars will fill up growlers. I would check out the top craft beer bars that were having promos this week for beer week as they will have some outstanding leftovers for sure, i.e. Flanny's, Tops, Papago, World of Beer(s), Whole Foods Chandler, Ground Control.

    ^Yep...

Wilderness, Four Peaks and Fate are solid stops if you are looking for breweries to get great beer in those growlers. If you are just looking for anyplace to fill growlers with a larger selection. World of Beer in Tempe or Gilbert has some of the largest tap selections. Angels Trumpet in Phoenix has a great tap list also. Ground Control is out towards the outer west end of Phoenix. Whole Foods in Chandler also has quite a few taps.

    this may work for me!

It looks like we're heading straight to the Gun Show and then heading straight back. So basically any place between CA/and Phoenix (and better off the freeway) may be my only bet.

    Thanks guys!

Papago brewing has great tap list like mentioned before, but I would defend their food as well. Thai chicken pizza is out of this world. Also World of Beer in Tempe on Mill Ave. has a pretty good selection right now with BCBBA, Firestone 17, Velvet Merkin, Sucaba, Helldorado, as well as The Abyss, Black Butte XXV (on draft, they have XXIV an XXV in bottles), Hop Henge and the new Pine Drops IPA. Four peaks is great and should have their Short Hop India Session Ale done by the time you are out here. All the other breweries I have yet to visit but have had offerings from Huss, Fate, and can vouch for their deliciousness. I would love to do an IP trade if you are still interested too...

Great information here. I'll be staying in Scottsdale from April 16-20; have access to Minnesota beers, including Surly releases. Would be up for an IP trade.

Thanks to your advice here I was able to hit Papago last night. The belgian pizza was awesome. Picked up some Bruery and Maui beer for the flight back to the cold cold midwest. Any idea where I could purchase Logsdon bottles near Scottsdale? I am planning on hitting AZ Wilderness also.

Saturday March 22nd is our BBQ and Beer festival in Chandler. We just celebrated Arizona Beer week and the Strong Beer Fest. Other than the one on the 22nd I don't think there is another large beer fest until May. That is when the AmeriCAN Canned Craft beer fest is.

Ive been lurking on this thread for a month now since I had a spring training trip planned for this week in Scottsdale. I cant thank all those who suggested AZ wilderness. I dragged my 2 year old daughter out there tonight and it was great (kid friendly too). As mentioned elsewhere, the staff is super friendly and its a great atmosphere. The burgers are enormous and very good. I had a ridiculously good DIPA and a very good and surprising sour brown ale. And its really just 20 minutes from Scottsdale. I also went to Papago, but I AZW was miles better in my opinion.
