My wife will be on a work trip to San Fran next week. I would like her to bring some CA beers back to WI. Where would be the best bottle shop near the Ferry building? I would particularly like her to get Russian River and 21st Amendment. Any other beers we "need" to bring back?

    Thanks!

Your best bet is city beer store for most bottles and they are close along the market corridor. I would suggest that she get a growler fill or two from cellarmaker if she is willing to bring growlers home. Other options for bottles that are in the area are whole foods soma, healthy spirits 15th st, and ales unlimited on Webster. Btw, cellarmaker has an incredible list of upcoming beers: mo'citra ipa, permanent daylight ipa, highway to the danker zone dipa, dank statement tipa and a session four barrel coffee stout...

I forgot that modern times is also having a bunch of events in the city this week so there will be plenty of their current releases in the area. And outside of the brewery your best bet for rr sours is probably ales unlimited or healthy spirits.

If she's able to swing it, I'd say take that BART over to Berkeley and grab a bottle of Home, Sour Home from The Rare Barrel.

Isn't 21st Amendment brewed and canned in Wisconsin? (Other than their brand new brew) I am not sure our selection is much different than your home turf

The selection will be no different. Everything that is available from 21A in the Bay Area is the same as what they distribute nationally. However they did just open a production facility in San Leandro, so they are no longer contract brewing.

I thought it was in MN. Either way, I think there are much more interesting beers to be found in the city. 4th st Whole Foods has a nice selection and is in the vicinity. If you want something really awesome, OP, talk her into getting a 32oz growler of something hoppy from Cellarmaker. Maybe ask them to tape the top really good.

The only Russian River bottles she's likely to find on shelves right now are Damnation, unless she gets lucky on Pliny delivery day.

Your best bet is probably City Beer...which isn't "near the ferry building", but a short BART ride and 5-10 minute walk away. There are actually 1 or 2 shops within the ferry building that might have some worthy CA offerings.

We cannot get 21A in WI. I can get it in Chicago though, so if there are no special offerings in SF than I dont need it.

If she goes to Toronado they usually have super fresh Pliny bottles available for carryout at a great price. It will be a hassle to get over there though, especially if she isn't into beer herself. If she is, it's worth the trip.

Tornado is pretty easy to get to, especially with Uber (with UberPool it'll be like $7 ride).

Yeah, because it's not like any Muni lines from the Ferry Building to within a couple blocks of Toronado, right? Oh wait...

Is an out-of-towner on a work trip likely to figure out the public trans options/schedule and take a bus to Toronado. I would think not. Obviously not knowing OP at all, what I do know, is most people from areas where people don't regularly use public trans, are afraid/not inclined to try to use it in other cities.

Depending on time of day and what's going on in the city, I've sat in some pretty horrific traffic getting from the financial district to Haight. I'd think the easiest thing to do would be to take BART from financial district to Civic Center and Uber from there.

Muni subway runs down market street to within 2 blocks of Toronado about every 5 minutes from 5am to ~1:30am.

If you can read a map at all, then public transportation options are pretty easy to navigate in major cities. It is places under 500,000 people and kinda spotty service where it gets difficult. All you would need is the map/schedule for the train/bus, and then just your standard street map (that comes standard on all smart phones) and you should be set.

I guess it may seem intimidating at first, but once you actually get on the train it is easy.

I don't disagree with you. This may be a mass generalization, but I feel like people from the midwest sans Chicago are intimidated by public trans and are not inclined to attempt to use it when out of town.

I grew up in a small Illinois town. I never had been on any form of public transport until I was in my late 20's (well maybe a time or two before that because Wrigley is easier to get to from the El). The first time I used it, I thought it was sketchy. You are not generalizing at all. Where I grew up public transport had a very negative stigma to it. I would guess that a vast majority of the people I grew up with still have never been on any form of public transportation at all.
My point is more along the lines of, people shouldn't be scared of it, because it is much easier and convenient than driving in major population centers. It also takes a fraction of the time instead of driving.
