I think the Westmalle is slightly less spicy and fruity than some but it is absolutley the most perfectly balanced one I've ever had. The Karmeliet has a lighter malt and more alcohol taste than the Westmalle, I think. It is great for summer.

I've only tasted one tripel, St. Bernardus, definitely need to explore more of the style. I do enjoy Belgian style beers.

Great style of beer for savoring every drop. Love Tripel beers and enjoy them with a meal especially.
Today in fact I had 2SP Tripel that was served on draft through a bunch of black cherries. It was a fun and delicious experiment. Westmalle, La fin du Monde, and Chimay come to mind as great ones for me.

I also think Stoudt's Tripel is pretty good. Almost forgot about that one. Lots of sediment so be careful but definitely worth the $10 I paid for a sixer. It's 9% too.

I wouldn't limit myself to just one style but if I had to limit myself to one style Belgium Tripels would be close to the top of the list.

Troeg's La Grave is really good. It represents the style better than most American versions that I have tried. Cork and Cage 12.7 oz bottles are cool too.

I gotta go with the big 3 as well; Westmalle, St. Bernardus and Karmeliet.

nods to locals Sly Fox Incubus and Naked Elf.

I love a good tripel, and am fortunate to live where I can get two good ones easily, Troegs LaGrave and Victory Golden Monkey. I like the light, sparkling, champagne-like, effervescent character of LaGrave. I also enjoy the funky, spiciness, and complexity of Monkey too. By the way, Troegs will be releasing a wood-aged, brett secondary fermented version of LaGrave this year. The beer was called Splinter Gold in the past when a brewery only release. This beer will be distributed as Nebulous. One of three new distributed products from Troegs this year.

I really need to try the Golden Monkey and La Grave. That's the possible good/bad with Tripels. The higher alcohol content means they can "cellar" for a good while and it also makes the quantity last too.
So, you guys are giving me great ideas on new offerings to try and possibly insert in my rotations to keep them fresh. I have Tripel Karmeliet, Ommegang Rare VOS, Chimay Cinq Cents, Schneider Weiss Aventinus Tap 6, Rogue DeadGuy ale and Orval Trappist ale in the fridge right now. Not all Tripels of course, but I think they all can hang at the party together with the exception of the Orval. That is a genuinely unique and tasty selection and I only have 3 left. Thanks everyone for the great input!

2 pages in and no love for the unique (albeit non-traditional) Gulden Draak?

I'd like to see more dark tripels in the world. Need we quibble over style conventions in Gulden Draak's case?

Add me as well. I love Tripels and their cousins Belgian Strong Pales equally.

Isn't it more of a Strong Dark? What's the "tripel" part in it? (granted, it's been awhile since I've had it).

Big fan of the Tripels besides for the ones listed here I also am a fan of Affligem's Tripel. Decent price and just a different twist on the conventional style as I seem to get more of a red apple flavor with it instead of the bubblegum banana effect. Of course for a great price and ease of finding La Fin Du Monde really is damn hard to beat.

Love tripels too! One of my very favorite styles- Drinkable, deceptive, boozy, sometimes hoppy, a great showcase for yeast character and complexity, highly carbonated, and historic (monastic tradition). It is a great all around beer that is both flavorful and drinkable at the same time.

    A few of my favorites:
    *Tripel Karmeliet
*Allagash Trippel and Curieux- maybe the best American examples
    *St. Bernardus trippel
    *Westmalle Tripel
    *Lu fin du monde
    *De Ranke Guldenburg
    *St. Bernardus Watou Tripel
    *Gouden Corolus Tripel
    *Achel 8

I think Gulden Draak (I love this beer) has been classified a number of ways, I've seen and heard of it being a called a dark tripel, a Belgian barleywine, and strong dark to name a few. Dont' think it really matters, but wouldn't necessarily call it a trippel either. I think it probably fits the other descriptions better. ( I think it has too much caramel character to fit the traditional tripel style.)
