Looking for some good affordable beers. My brother just got into craft and I am not a huge Belgian guy or pale lager He likes Allagash Triple and Stella. Allagash is nice, but can't stand having to drink Stella when I am at his house. For triples I know Golden Monkey and Merry Monks. Then for a Stella comparable Jabby Brau. Any and all reccomendations are appriciated
Have you tried Duvel or Tripel Karmeliet ? If you don't like Weihenstephaner Original, then pale lagers just aren't your thing...
Westmalle tripel is quintessential. For pale lagers I drink Radeberger, St pauli girl, lowenbrau, pilsner urquell - whatever 12 pack is available/cheapest/freshest at the store. Personally I find these euro imports to be better (and way more consistent) than Jabby Brau.
That's a good one. You can find single bottles of many of the Weihenstephaners at Market Basket for cheap. Buy one of each (each is a different style) and see if any of them stick.
Westmalle Tripel +1 (especially if you prefer dry ... I don't know how they make such a dry tripel, it's exquisite), and definitely grab some Tripel Threat from Cambridge Brewing Company. I also had the Bombed Blondeshell at Watch City in Waltham last night ... I find their stuff to be hit or miss, but the BB was very good.
If we're doing the six-pack thing, then I'd have to say that Pilsner Urquell trumps Stella Artois any day of the week. There are not a lot of great craft-brewed Lagers around, but Jack's Abby probably comes the closest to continental Lagerbier in New England. For Tripels, Westmalle is great, and St. Bernardus is good. If you're feeling adventurous and you can find it on the shelf, Dupont Avec Les Bon Voeux is a great strong, pale Saison, almost like a dirty (and delcious) classic Tripel.
