I'm trying to think of any tripels I REALLY liked and honestly, the Westmalle or Roquefort are the only ones I can think of that were actually good IMO.

Due to some unfortunate dental surgery and discomfort I was advised to pack a tooth socket with cloves a number of years ago. After that I cannot stomach the taste of cloves...so you can imagine my distaste when I tried La Fin Du Monde. It wasn't terrible...but that clove taste was still there. Is that clove taste in all tripels or just La Fin?

I've grown to dislike most Tripels over the years, but there are a few that I still love:

Straffe Hendrik Brugse Tripel Bier 9° (but only on tap or in the 750ml bottles: the 330ml bottles just don't taste the same)
    St. Bernardus Tripel
    Tripel Karmeliet
    Westmalle Trappist Tripel
Chimay Tripel (aka Cinq Cents in the 750ml bottles)

    Despite my avatar...
De Dolle's Dulle Teve (Mad Bitch) is an awesome tripel.

If you can get Aviator Devil's Tramping Ground, that should set you right.

Had Westmalle last night and it was the best Tripel I have had - great example of the style.

I don't think I've ever really gotten a cheese flavor out of any Tripels, especially my favorites. I'd definitely grab a Allagash Tripel or the Bruery's Trade Winds and rock those out. They're probably my faves of the style that I've had so far.

You live in New York. Track down some Golden Delicious or Xtra Gold from Captain Lawrence. Both awesome.
