Every beer I've had that has been labeled "triple IPA" has been a boozy mess, even from good breweries. And they don't even taste hoppy to me. The astringency of the alcohol tends to outweigh the bitterness of the hops.
Anyway, that's one man's opinion. Does anyone out there like these or is it a case of breweries giving us too much of what we ask for?

Prefer my hop bombs to be under 9% abv. After it gets above that they just seem too boozy - and the abv makes it so you can only have one or two of them in a sitting.

I get what you're saying but I would'nt necessarily call them a boozy mess. They're a different style of IPA and you either like them or you don't.

I agree, triple IPAs are dumb, some seem to just put the word triple IPA on the label though when there is no real difference between that and a double... Cough "Green Bullet" Cough.. 10.1%, I do not see the difference between that and countless of doubles that range from 9-11%...

I tend to agree. It's a 'meh' every time. I still try them occasionally, but I can't drink more than 12oz. at a time.

Green Bullet is fantastic though, I just refer to it as an Imperial IPA.

Boozy taste in beer is an immediate turn off for me. I am noticing that I rarely crack open anything over 8% these days. It's not that I don't like a strong alcohol taste, heck I drink bourbon and other whiskeys regularly. It's just that I don't want it in my beer. I know I'm in the minority on that (at least in the BA community). So OP, I'm on board with you regarding the "Triple IPA's" but I'd go one farther and say that hopped or not hopped, a lot of "big" beers are nothing but a big ol' mess to me.

First Green Bullet I had, just ordered on a whim without knowing much about it. Was shocked to learn it was 10.1 after the fact. Also noticed that the bottle label says triple, but this site lists it as double (maybe there's no real triple category yet).

Anyway, thumbs up to THAT particular model at least.

I'm just apalled there is no quad IPA yet. Come on craft beer marketing teams.

*edit* wow just a second too slow posting, serves me right for joking.

I suppose you can blame PtY, which is unworldly.

I tend to prefer my DIPAs a tad drier than many are. Triple IPAs tend to amp up that sweetness even further, so I don't tend to love them.

Dogfish 120 is the godfather of the Triple IPA I think, and most others are in that vein - sweet, with some hop character. I recently had the Evil Twin Molotov Cocktail (13%) and thought it tasted like hop candy. Super sweet with a nice hoppiness. Not a style I love, but I can appreciate some well-made examples, but it's pushing the sweetness too much usually, and I like my hoppy beers considerably more crisp and dry.

I would go even further and say DF 120 was/is the first Quad IPA. I dislike it and the Triples. Exacltly what you said, to get the high an ABV there needs to be soo much malt in the grain bill, sickly sweet and boozey at same time.

"Triple IPA" because calling it a barleywine wouldn't sell as much!

120 is Way more than a Quad. It's like a sextuple IPA and Utopias is like a Dodectuple IPA. There is a very easy way to figure out the correct categorization of these beers: take the abv and divide by 4. So a 12% is a triple, an 8% is a double, and a 24% is a sextuple, etc.

Oh, I figured that. I just figured more breweries attempted this style once PtY showed up and received all that attention.
