the terms Double and Triple, especially when not used with a Trappist, is a marketing term.
if you want to brand your product as extreme or different from the pack it works well. you bought it, right?

personally, unbalanced beers have a place. I'm not surprised if the beer is boozy, bitter or otherwise a train wreck.
    Cheers.

Could not agree with you more here. Recently, I've been trying a lot of stouts with varying levels of ABV. I've found the lower ABV stouts simply taste more balanced and more like beer to me. A lot of the heavier stouts taste like a stout with a shot of whiskey. I'd rather drink the whiskey separately. There are exceptions - Founders Imperial Stout being one of them.

I feel the same way about IPAs. My "sweetspot" for most beers tend to be 6-8%. After that, I tend to run into trouble.

Relax, everyone, it's just a name. And what's in a name? Obviously not a true description of what's in the bottle, can or keg.

Devil Dancer is a bit of a mess especially with any age on it. Had a Green Bullet last night and it was quite good.

This thread is the first time I've seen someone refer to Utopias as an IPA LOL! Also, if I saw the term Quad IPA on the bottle, I would probably think it was a Belgian IPA of some sort...

Not sure if it's been said yet, but here goes:

Triple IPA = American style Barleywine.

It was more of a euphemism. Nobody actually refers to DF 120 as quad, and you'lll be hard pressed to find an examble of Dodectuple being used.

But more to point, the ABV increments are not a geometric sequence. Either way, I blame DF.

It's been said plenty of times, just not in this thread... However, I can't help but think you're drinking terrible examples of a triple IPA if you think it's the same thing as an American barleywine. Simtra, for example, has been mentioned many times as an excellent "triple" IPA, but I've never confused it for an American barleywine...

I tend to not care for (D)IPAs that are higher than about 8.5%. Over 10%, forget about it. Simtra - when fresh - is the delicious exception to the rule.

Only beer I've had labeled a Triple IPA (that I can recall) was Devil Dancer. May have had one or two other than that that I don't remember.

If I wanted booze, I'd drank shots of Kentucky bourbon. Y'all are entitled to your opinions, I have no quarrel w/ that .I like my beer balanced. Malts, hops and yes ABV. Roasted barley, hop kick, blah blah. To each their own. Extreme for the sake of extremes' sake, fine. You like it, I don't. I prefer a nice pint or mug of a fine soul-warmin' ale or lager. You may not. I dig a cold Bud on a hot 110 degree summers day and a slightlly chilled stout or Red on a cold frosty mornin'. It's Beer Advocate, for Gawd's sake. Encourage each other. No beer is better than the one you, and you alone, are into right now.

Seems pretty excessive to put 4 X's on a 10.6% imperial IPA lol... Maybe they should follow **** ratings, and there would be no need to put more than XXX.

Would rather have a Barleywine and keep my DIPAs around 8-9%.

I love when people complain about how beers nowadays are "too hoppy" or "too boozy." I have yet to find a brewery that only releases boozy or super hoppy beers. There are tons of "regular" beers out there.

What exactly is multiplied times 3 in an Triple IPA? Is it the hops, the hop flavor, the ABV, the boil time, etc?

I'd personally like to think that the Double and Triple prefixes refer to how many times the letter "I" shows up in the acronym.

An IPA is an India Pale Ale
An Imperial India Pale Ale is a IIPA or a Double IPA
Perhaps a triple IPA is an Intensely Imperial India Pale Ale.
Quad - Incredibly Insanely Imperial India Pale Ale?
Quint - Incredibly Impossible Ill-advised Imperial India Pale Ale?
