I was majorly disappointed with Green Bullet.

I don't know what Evil Twin - Molotov Cocktail calls itself (double or triple?) but that one is almost too boozy to enjoy. Almost..

I think it's very nice of the breweries to classify them as TIPA's so that people that don't like them can just avoid the style entirely instead of weeding through various DIPA's to figure out which ones are "a boozy mess".

If you regard a DIPA or triple IPA as a barleywine, that means they aren't making it right or that you are ignorant of what an American barleywine tastes like. Pliny the Younger (and recently Rip Current's Caught in a Rip) are much drier and clean, with very little caramel malt sweetness. Even the Green Bullet (really a DIPA IMO) has those characteristics.

Then again, most the country has regular IPAs loaded up with the goddamned caramel "balance" so it isn't surprising most people are clueless.

One could argue that double and triple are marketing terms, even in Trappist brewing. After all, if you get down to it, Tripel is really just a type of Belgian Strong Pale Ale and Dubbel is really just a type of Belgian Dark Ale or BDSA.

haven't you had a barleywine? Which is basically what a triple IPA is as well. Boozy beast that needs to age.

I agree with the OP and I prefer my doubles at about 8% or so. Once you go higher you risk Barleywine characteristics and there is just too much malt to have a good IPA-esque thing.

It is all just a label/name. I would argue there is more variation within the style IPA--from face melting hop bombs to more malty offerings to almost pale ales.

Maharaja--blind taste it and half will go with big DIPA and others Barleywine. Why not a TIPA? I think it fits them all.

Half the fun of this hobby is the experimentation. Bring 'em on-call it what you want.

Simtra is one of my top 5 all-time favorites. Drank a bottle of this every day for a month before moving away from California...

Agreed, Devil Dancer is the worst beer Founders makes. Everything else they make ranges from good to amazing. Also is Dogfish Head 120 Minute technically a quintuple IPA since it's 18% alcohol?

I've watched smart people become stupid drinking 8%+ beers. They know they're strong, but they can't help themselves. It's like an experiment with rats choosing the strong one over the weaker one. They crawl off and get hungry or go to sleep. Sometimes I'll drink a strong one early, tone it down thereafter, or have a stronger nightcap. A neat single malt is perfect for me.

Can't forget about Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree--maybe not labeled as a triple but at 12% would probably qualify. Pretty damn good, too, if I recall.

The words "boozy" and "mess" seem inextricably linked on this site, but I don't see why a boozy beer should necessarily be a mess.

PtY and Green Bullet are hoppy, and aren't boozy messes (I can't speak for PtY personally, but the ratings seem to think it's pretty good, eh?). They're both marketed as TIPAs.

That said, we generally call them Imperial IPAs and leave it at that. There might be something in the idea that most brewers who shoot for a Triple IPA just end up with a cruddy beer. Even 120 min and Devil Dancer, which are not poor beers, ARE ginormous malt/hop bomb crossovers with a hugely boozy presence.

If the OP premise is that brewers should generally avoid trying to make TIPAs, I agree. If the premise is that there is no such thing as a brewer shooting for a TIPA and ending up with a great beer, I do not agree.
