I agree. Simtra tastes nothing like a Barleywine and other beers labeled Triple IPA don't have those characteristics either. Maybe a, East Coast very malt forward triple could veer off into the Barleywine category but definitely not a west coast one. That being said it definitely doesn't deserve it's own category.

It makes more sense to me to drop the double, triple, quadruple, etc., and just put them all in the imperial IPA category. But maybe there should be East Coast American IPA and West Coast American IPA categories lol...

Does the Double in DIPA refer to the fact that there is "double" the amount of hops/ alcohol or whatever...

Or does it already refer to Imperial India Pale Ale, which could be abbreviated as IIPA or... double I - PA

seems to me the "triple IPA" moniker is just used as a selling point, and a way to let the customer know that this is a BIG beer with lots of ABV and huge hops. it would stand to reason that normal IPA ABV goes from 5-7%, DIPA goes from 7-9%-ish, and the Triple IPAs are usually 9.5-10-12%

as for Barleywine vs triple IPA. All I can say is that the "triple IPAs" that I have had (Pliny the Younger, GF Bullet, etc.) taste way different than say a Bigfoot or other traditional barleywines.

If you do a style for a Triple IPA, then you have to do one for Quadruple IPA, then Quintuple IPA, then you'll have people marrying animals, trees, fruits, brooms, shoes, etc...

In the future IIIPA will be a legit style of it's own, just like IIPA's came to be (after many discussions just like this one). Similar to IIPA's but at least 10% abv with increased hopping.
    So let it be written.
