I grabbed a six of the 4/28 bottles, no cans at my Wegmans. Hopefully it’s a good one!

Unfortunately this batch seemed a bit subdued. There wasn’t much hop aroma to speak of, and taste wise I wouldn’t put this bottle of NN up there either. There was a nice level of bitterness. It is a fine beer that I won’t have any problem drinking, it’s just not at the level I know Troegs is capable of reaching with NN.

Back in the day, with the label of the hand squeezing the hop, this was a regular buy for me. Then local options like Uncle Rusty from Columbus Brewing, Bone Head from Fat Head’s and Nosferatu from Great Lakes became more available, albeit at different times of the year. Even at a ratio of 80/20 good/meh, I would not buy. Given that @JackHorzempa and others place it around 50/50, I’m out.

Sounds like this bottled batch (4/28) is a bad batch. :slight_frown:

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here.

    Cheers!

Question: From this thread (unless I missed something) there appears to be two different Best By dates 4/28 and 4/29-the former in bottles and the latter in cans. Is it possible that this beer is all from the same batch and just packaged differently? And could the packaging play any part in the smell/taste?

I had Nugget Nectar last year for the first time-in bottles. It wasn't a bad beer by any means, but the smell and taste seemed somewhat subdued. Hoping to pick up some this weekend.

I have no insight into the brewing operations at Troegs (e.g., size of a batch, packaging rate, etc.) so I can't respond here.

I previously posted my experience from a couple/few years ago where I bought two six-packs. The bottled six-pack was good while the canned six-pack wasn't. Does this mean the bottling line is 'better' than the canning line? I personally would not reach this conclusion.

Maybe the folks at Troegs know what the issue is here with Nugget Nectar inconsistency but if they do they are not sharing the details.

I personally do not have enough insight into their overall brewing operations to make an educated guess here.

    Cheers!

I don't recall if this has been posted yet but I would like to try it:

Tröegs Brewing Expected To Release “Double Nugget Nectar” Thursday January 21st
    https://www.breweriesinpa.com/troegs-brewing-expected-to-release-double-nugget-nectar-soon/

    Beer Release Update:

The brewery has confirmed the following regarding the release of this beer:

“We have indeed taken Nugget Nectar and pushed it into Double Nugget territory. The first swing at it was on our 3-barrel Scratch Lab, and now we’ve ramped it up for a small-batch can release. Starting Thursday, Jan 21, Double Nugget will be available in 16-oz. cans from our General Store and on draft in our Tasting Room. It won’t make it beyond our brewery this year, but if people love it, that could certainly change down the road.”

I wonder how close to Nimble Giant it will end up being. Maybe just a bit darker

Anyone have the 4/30 date? My local spot got in cans with this date.

So, I ended up getting a 12pk of 12oz cans, dated "Freshest By" 4/23/20. Don't think these had been mentioned here.

I felt like the aroma was slightly stronger than last year (which I thought was pretty unimpressive) and the taste was about the same. FWIW, I had bottles last year. Could definitely pick up bitter pine and resins, but also a fair amount of alcohol.

Don't get me wrong, I think this is a decent enough beer but it doesn't rank as "special" for me. Would love to have tried past year's "good" batches for comparison. Cheers!

Well, if you are willing to continue 'rolling the dice' maybe you will luck out with a future purchase of Nugget Nectar?

Hopefully 'good' batches of Nugget Nectar are not just an artifact of previous year's brewing.

    Cheers!

I’ve noticed the 12oz cans seem to be dated bb 04/23 and the 16 oz cans bb 4/29

A beer that’s been a staple for this long should not have “bad batches”. That’s kind of unacceptable. This beers been a seasonal as long as I can remember.

Just speaking for me but it is never a bad beer or close to it in my opinion. I do notice some years there is more aroma then others but that is about it, for me. To each their own though, there has never been a year I have not enjoyed it and I will continue to buy my annual six pack.

I'll probably roll the dice next year, Jack. Like I said, not a bad beer by any means. But knowing it has been and could be better will keep me in the hunt. Hopeful for 2022...

    Kudos to you!

I bought zero Nugget Nectar last year and this year (based upon the discussion in this thread) I will buy zero Nugget Nectar. There are just so many high quality hoppy beers available for purchase at my local beer retailers, why roll the dice? I will just buy beer that I know will have hop aroma and will be tasty.

    Cheers!

"Hey brewer your beer is undercarbonated and flat I think this batch might be off."

Brewer "Fuck off my beers fine, you are moron."

I know what your saying but I still want to drink that guy's beer :relaxed:.

As for 2021 NN I picked up a 4 pack of pounders I usually get a case but it seemed slightly pricier this year. The one or two I drank was good but I'd just pickup whatever $40 a case IPA that landed that week and not think twice about a repeat.

I traded for some last year as I usually do and was pretty disappointed as it was extremely fresh.. after perusing this thread. I won't be doing it this year...I'm with you.. I'm a fan of consistency and a big brewer like Troegs should have that recipe nailed down despite slight differences in hop quality, selections, etc...

    Tröegs is highly overrated.
    Much better beers out there.
All they brew are hop bombs except Mad elf and that stuff tastes like cough syrup.
