I heard that it's only malty in the Philadelphia area, so the stuff that hits Boston should be OK.

That should be a new show. It's Always Malty in Philadelphia. I'd be better than Beerland, I know that for sure.

I opened one two nights ago and I was surprised by the lack of hop flavor and aroma. I would definitely call it malty. Granted, simcoe/nugget/etc... don't pop like citra/cascade do. Sometimes I wonder if I have a blind-spot on my palette for piney/resiny hops. I did a side-by-side with a Founders All-Day and I got a lot more aroma and flavor from All-Day.

Hard to compare those two beers as they are vastly different, with vastly different hops used. NN is certainly the more malty of the two with less hop nose, though, so I wouldn't say that you have a "blind spot".

I suppose some person would say you purchased a Philadelphia area batch!?!

Aw shit. I just bought some Nugget Nectar and another PA beer (Nashaminy Creek Croyson Cream Ale). I don't think I jinxed us. As long as I don't drink it the day of the game, right? I think it'll be fine. It'll be fine, won't it?

Okay I just got home from work. Just popped my first bottle of this years batch, best by date 4/26/18.

I dunno, guys. This years batch tastes the same as it always does to me. Not a massive hoppy aroma but it's hoppy enough. I don't think this beer has ever had a massive hoppy aroma though, to be honest. Flavor is the same as always as well. Slightly fruity hops, herbal bitterness, caramel malt. This is the very same hoppy amber ale I've had for years. To call this malty is a total joke. Perhaps people need to start drinking more ESB, English Pale Ale, Munich Dunkel, Dopplebock, etc. to readjust their perception of what "malty" really is.

Until I experience the same "bad batch" personally, I'm going to file a lot of these opinions into the "Hopslam/PtY/NN/[insert seasonal hoppy beer] isn't as good as last year" folder.

Yep. Saying there's batch variation is one thing. Complaining that an amber tastes malty is ridiculous.

It's almost as though they didn't read the label. "An Imperial Amber Ale has a strong malt backbone? No way!"

To add a positive data point here - purchased a 6 pack BB 5/19/18 and tastes perfectly fine to me.

Do NOT drink it on Sunday, and it'll all work out fine . :sunglasses:

I was on this page for the most part as well until my last bottle which was really flat. Important to note that I purposely held on to a bottle for a week+ but if that is the quick fall off others have mentioned that was pretty fast!

I still stand by my thoughts and happy I purchased and enjoyed but like years past this will be my one and only purchase.

I'm glad you had a positive experience with your batch. I have to disagree however about NN never really having a big hoppy aroma. When this beer is on, the nose is one of its best attributes. I loved my first 12 pack this year, so palate shift is not the culprit here. Of course this is all subjective anyway, we all have different tastes and that is quite alright as well

I totally agree. Thanks for sharing your experience on the matter.

EDIT: by the way, it definitely did have a big hop aroma but it wasn't like some new age DDH IPA we see (smell?) today. The bottle I had was plenty hoppy. As you said taste is subjective and perhaps I was fearing for the worst and when I finally had it I was pleasantly surprised

Popping my first one. Huh, not much on the nose, well nothing, doing it blind I couldn't make a guess to style. As for taste I'd say it's incredibly well balanced, it's not life altering, but it's nicely hoppy
Certinly nothing close to overly malty. Overall I really like it, and I hate to say last year was ....., but it's missing the nose of last year, but if there's a difference in taste it would be lost on me. Cans 5/14 best by date. I'd buy this again, but there's not a lot here, not a lot at all. Let me add out of the can next one in a glass, let me also add I don't have a sensitive nose.

I don't have a super sensitive nose, so for me it's hard to tell unless it's a hop blast. The taste is there, balanced, nicely hoppy , bitter is there but controlled. I've had lousy batches before thankfully thus one isn't it. But I agree with you it can be over the place.
