Also had my 1st NN of the year tonight. Bottle BB 5/5/18. It's a malty sweet amber ale with very little hop presence but I enjoyed it nonetheless. NN has always been a malty amber ale to my taste. I've been drinking it for 8-9 years now and never found it to have much hop presence at all. I'll continue to pick up a 6 pack each year but those looking for a hop bomb should probably stop looking for something that isn't there. And yes I miss the old colorful labels too.

Just had my first of the season from a 12oz can with a best by date of 2018-05-03. Still tasty and quite enjoyable. Perhaps a bit more malt forward than I remember but my tastes have evolved over the years. Glad for the 12-pack, which cost $25.10 from a distributor here in high-priced PA.

I tend to agree with you, but it might be a matter of perspective.

The first time I had NN was back in 03 or 04 (if memory serves), and I think initially it was only available in draft format. At the time, the craft selection on the East coast was much more limited,, and back then "hoppy beers" consisted of things like hop devil, hop pocket, 60 and 90 minute IPA. I don't think Troegs was even making an IPA back then.

(and like pretty much everyone else I gather, I find the new Troeg labels to be an abomination)

In comparison to those beers, NN came across as a very nicely hopped beer (at least to my palate), and we all referred to it as an IPA. The beer bar in Baltimore where I first sampled NN listed it as an IPA.

Times change and so does one's palate exposure. Today, I think of NN as a malt forward IPA, with a modest hop presence. There's just enough hoppy bitterness to keep things interesting, and to keep the sweet malt from becoming overwhelming. A good beer I think, but certainly it doesn't compare to some of the hop bombs you can find on the market today.

(and like pretty much everyone else, I find the new Troegs labels to be an abomination)

I was, honestly, the last person to believe in the drastic batch variation until I experienced it. It certainly didn't stop me from picking up another six-pack of Nugget Nectar bottles today (and at $11.19 w/ tax all in!, Devon Whole Foods is running 20% off now).

We’ll see what drops in VA this week, appreciate the heads up from everyone. Will pick up a sixer regardless and hoping for the best

I plan on getting some. I have to buy at least one six pack each year.

Same here. Picked up a sixer of bottles, BB 05/15, and I went in thinking that there would be no issues, as I have never experienced the batch variation (but I usually only get one sixer a year either in bottles or cans). I enjoyed both bottles I have had already but definitely on the maltier end, missing some of that hop pop in both taste and smell and a tad bit thin. Zero issue for me, though, as again still enjoyed it and it's interesting being able to taste the malts a little more. But I do have to say that the beers I drank were more in line with what I would expect from an Imperial Amber if I had never had this beer before and just went off of the name vs a red IPA and while unlikely, maybe this is deliberate?

I know that this is all subjective but keep in mind I have not been drinking IPAs regularly lately so it's not like my palate is blown out or anything.

I am going to keep a bottle or two for at least another week+ and see if aging makes any difference. I am still happy with the purchase and will gladly drink through these.

Shane, I was at Capone's (Norristown, PA) last night and they had Nugget Nectar on tap. I requested a sample before ordering a pint. There was little to no hop aroma in that beer. I ended up ordering an Evolution 'NEIPA' beer instead.

    Cheers!

What BB dates have you had that you felt were sub par?

I had another pint of it while out for lunch on Saturday. To my surprise, it was very tasty. Just like every other time I've drank it.

Just go through this thread and see all the dates people have posted and the different opinions. My assumption from these posts is that tastes differ from one person to another.

I forgot I had a 5/8 BB can on Saturday, so I have had 5/5, 5/8, and 5/11. All were solid to me.

Just picked up a single can of the BB 5/11 here in Norfolk and it's tasting great to me. Also got a six pack of bottles BB 5/15 I'll sample in the next few days
