Brewery-only, on-site only because the bottles are apparently way too overcarbed. The description sounds like...well, it sounds like a mess. Splinter Brown’s roots extend to July 2010 with the brewing of Scratch #34, a Belgian-style Dubbel. Some of this wort made it into a “funk” tank to ferment with bacteria and a blend of ale, Brett and sherry yeasts, but a large quantity was bottled in one of the brewery’s earliest bottle-conditioning projects. When the bottles didn’t carbonate properly, a resourceful brewer blended nearly 100 cases of beer with the original “funk” tank beer and transferred it into oak barrels. Fast forward to 2013, and this beer has aged with a finely developed Brett character, but only minimal tartness. Splinter Brown’s third flavor profile was created by blending the barrel-aged beer with a fresh-brewed sour mash fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and aged for six months in French and Hungarian oak wine barrels. This unique merger of flavors has resulted in a wonderfully complex Sour Brown Ale that is truly a labor of love. Cheers! Anyone going to make it down today? Thoughts on this would be welcomed before I head over tomorrow.
To clarify the "over-carbonation" issue... it's not over-carbonated per se. The issue is due to the fact that Splinter Brown was bottled manually before the new cork & cage filler/bottling line was installed. While the beer is bottle conditioned and highly carbonated, the issue has more to do with cage integrity rather than overcarbonation. Cheers!
I will be going down later to try both of the new beers. Not really sure why you would think it would be a "mess," I think it sounds like a pretty nice sour brown. Looking forward to trying them.
what time are you going? i feel like im fighting a cold off but would love to try this...and i dont know if it will last until next Friday when i could go down
We went down and already had it. A pretty tasty sour brown, but I'll admit I'm not jonesing to have it again soon. There are so many fabulous sours on the market right now there's just stiff competition for my wallet. The mushroom ale, however, was much less gross than I expected it to be. Actually enjoyed it quite a bit.
I'm pretty surprised. I saw this and couldn't comprehend how it could be any good. I might get to try it, hopefully I feel the same way.
Splinter Brown was quite tasty. The mushroom ale was okay, nothing special. And Master of Pumpkins was just bad. Really thin body. All IMO, of course.
I thought Brown had a lot going on. Maybe "mess" was too strong of a word initially. Mushroom rocked though, tasted like a hoppy porter.
