So fire34fighter and I are thinking of entering into an agreement where I would pick beer from the spring house barrel reserve society for him. I've been out of the trading loop for a couple of years, but I gather that this sort of relationship is common these days. Any advice? Unforseen circumstances you wish you had planned for? Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers, Dan
Generally the other party would pay for all the beers ahead of time, send you a shipper (so you don't need to deal with too much packing) and then sends you a shipping label. And probably he sends you a couple thank you beers for the effort . I'm doing it for someone now works for us.
Interesting...So most people don't use paypal and I just pay him back for the shipping? Seems like a waste to send shipping stuff in order to have it sent back when you could just paypal them some $ to pay for stuff....Also what's the usual process for if a something breaks?
the reason is that shipping is a PITA I would rather avoid. frankly I wouldn't trustee for someone if he asked me to individually bubble wrap 8 bottles or whatever. but being sent a shipper makes things very easy so I'm happy too help out. also I would rather be sent some cool beers I can't buy than be sent money to go buy my locals.
I recently was proxy for two guys for the BA Sump release, and both of them sent boxes with payment and thank you beers for doing the pickup for them. All I had to do was go pick up the bottles, repack the box, and send it back. It was really simple. The main thing is that the proxy is doing a favor by picking up the bottles and sending it back, so making it as easy as possible on them should be the goal. That includes the money for the bottles/shipping, a box to repack and send back, and some beer to say thank you, since the proxy really isn't getting anything else out of the transaction for going out of their way to pick up, pack, and ship a box for someone else.
Understood. I didn't think about having the shippers sent there. I already planned on sending thank you beers. Anybody have any experience when a bottle breaks?
I proxy for a few folks and, personally, I find the idea of having shippers sent rather wasteful. They pay for the beer and shipping. I pack with whatever materials I have on hand, usually add a few extras. If there are other items that they want as part of a bigger trade, I negotiate that in. I send to them and they reply with a box. I don't worry about the packing materials figuring there will be packing materials as part of what comes back to me and that they'll take care of me with beers. If I didn't trust a person to do that, I wouldn't want to be a trustee for them. (Notice "trust" as the root of "trustee".) Similarly, if a couple dollars of packaging up front was a financial burden, I wouldn't be mailing out beer - period.
1. Obtain a shipper that is big enough to hold the society bottles 2. Send Thank you box in said shipper 3. Trustee fills shipper with your bottles 4. Shipper is sent back to you with a label from your fedex account 5. ??? 6. Profit
I don't think anything should be expected if something breaks. You are taking the risk on of joining a society you are not local to and the risk of needing to have those bottles transported. If you want to be in total control of transportation of the bottles then you can make the trip to get them. Just one mans opinion, but I would be shocked if anyone would expect their trustee to make up for broken bottles in transit - I know I wouldn't. Edit - If breakage is due to poor packaging by trustee, then cut your losses and find someone else to trustee for you.
I disagree. I don't view this any different than a normal trade where delivery is always the responsability of the shipper. I've always sent styro shippers in thus case to mitigate some if the shipping risk. This is something to discuss with the other party beforehand perhaps.
Agree 100% I would never ask someone to trustee for me if I didn't have past history with them, that I was confident everything would be packed properly in a timely manner. That person is doing me a HUGE favor, and should assume no responsibilities at all. Any issues with shipping would not be their fault, would simply be a product of the carriers fucking things up - it happens, and I certainly wouldn't put that on the trustee doing me a solid. It isn't like a trade, as said above. I mean, if the trustee is responsible for such things, then the truster(?) actually has zero responsibility in the transaction. Its no different than a gopickitupformebro. Ill gladly put in the leg work, certainly not gonna take responsibility if something beyond my control happens...thats the risk YOU take, and you should know that...and yes, I have been on both sides of such arrangements and accept such things on both ends.
Donno. IMO your trading beer for the trustees time instead of his beer. And the 'truster' is responsible for all money, shipping, and generous thank you box for the hassle. But its cool I understand your opinion, we just have different views. Thus is also why I shy away from these sorts of transactions.
