Hey all, I was sad to hear that Tullycross Tavern closed in early November of this year. I enjoyed many beers there over the years; both when it was John Harvard's and when it transitioned into Tullycross. I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about what, if anything was being done with the location and if there were any plans for another brewery/brewpub in the location?
That closing was very sudden But I think many restaurants close without any warning like that. I don't know if another brewpub will open there. Maybe someone knows where the tanks and brewing equipment are heading, if anywhere.
Interesting. I thought they were doing ok up there.Wonder what happened, food and beer nothing to write home about?
not a big surprise... they seemed to have their finger way *off* the pulse of the craft beer revolution--and the food was terrible. that said, i hope uncle frank keeps brewing and finds work somewhere else. not just because i never want to see people lose their jobs, but because he makes some great stuff. some great IPAs came out of there, and he's made some really fantastic iterations of "humbler" styles like alts and lower ABV stouts, lots of great malt-anchored beers. edit: interestingly, yelp tells me that frank left/got fired. wonder how the new brewmaster was.
Brian Flach took over after Uncle Frank moved on. Brian produced some great beers there, but left about six months ago.
I liked some of the beer they had, but the food was bad. The happy hour pizza and wings were not made from scratch. Fruit flies around the bars. Lousy service.
After Brian left, they really scaled back brewing big time and started to introduce guest taps and pushing weird cocktails. I figured they were on their way out when I asked to have a growler filled and there was only one person there who knew how to do fills. There was a bartender there who was a really nice guy, and knew beer. I hope the people who worked there landed on their feet elsewhere. I never got bad service there, but the food never improved on what it was when the place was John Harvard's. I'm still bummed that CT lost another brewpub, though.
Well that sucks. It was a very convenient location right off Rte. 84. Definitely went downhill after Uncle Frank was gone.
I gave Tullycross about 4 chances because I WANTED to like it....but yeah, to echo what some are saying in this thread, the food was awful. Aside from a couple good IPA's, the beer was average at best and the service was really bad a couple of the times I went too. Was not remotely surprised to see them close up, but I do hope someone else can jump in and make a brew pub work there, even though that might be a long shot.
I got a mug there two years ago as a back up to my regular pub which at the time was in a rut with their beer orders and had a limited interest in aquiring a diverse selection of craft brews. Brian's beer was good and i thought the food was good as well. Still I found it curious that the restaurant was rarely at capacity and i wasn't thrilled that the mug got smaller at renewal yet the price for beer went up. I visited for the first time in about six months about two months ago. The place was dead and not a single mug club member was at the bar. I'm heading to former Tully bartender "Jeff's" new place for the first time later today for lunch and will see if I've got a new back-up right in my backyard.
ah, cool. yeah his facebook makes it seem that things aren't going so badly. glad he's still going with it.
