Question for the BA community. A local place just got a keg of one of my favorite, highly rated, adjunct, imperial stouts. This keg is pouring murky and I got chunks in a taste. It has a grainy mouth feel. This is a great beer that I have enjoyed in the past both in the bottle and on tap.

Does this keg just need to settle or will it never pour right?

    Probably just needs to settle.

Baring general speculation, I think that question would better be answered by the specific brewery who made it. But as Mambossa said it may just need to settle a while.

I would reach out to the brewery but that sounds off. I never had chunks in a stout.

Can you tell us the name of the stout and how old the keg is? Maybe someone here had the beer before and could assist more with some added info

    Cheers

Some beers are intentionally chunky. I've noted - for instance - that Avery Truffale has many huge chunks of raspberry slices - up to nickel size. What's the beer? Or are you reluctant to throw them under the bus?

Woah seriously? Should modern beer have chunks of anything in it even close to nickel-sized? That’s bonkers. And straight up unappetizing. I want my fermented foods to be presented in their own packaging. Not a mix of beer and partially fermented raspberry chunks :no_mouth:

And this is after I inadvertently drank some. The pieces didn't have any flavor left in them, so I HOPE they were raspberry. I finally strained it. I have several bottles left, so I'll strain them before drinking. Not sure if these were the bottom of the keg. One I had months before didn't have any.

Momi Hiwa had coconuts floating in it. How the hell they don't have infection issues is beyond me.

That looks like a yeast cake. If you’ve kept the bottles long enough upright, that’s (hopefully) a bottle from near the end of the run, where, unfortunately, a lot of unfiltered beers get dead yeast pulled into the bottles.

Looks like that yeast settled for a while, caked up, and finally broke apart as you agitated it with the pour.

Best bet for the next ones is being extremely careful in handling, and pour slow

Also what kind of beer is this?

Edit: I’m assuming you probably know most of this. I apologize if I came off as patronizing.

Those are not raspberry chunks and that is not intentional.....

My exact thoughts... but then I also looked at the reviews of the beer. Things just got weirder.

Right! 4 of the first 5 that I read all talked about the thick floaters. Another reviewer thought they were raspberries :grimacing:

Hmmm, I've never seen that before so just presumed raspberries. The beer is Avery Raspberry Truffale Imperial Stout. I'll have to pull another out for tonight.

I never saw a beer contain chunks like this, that is definitely not a visual I want to see in my beer.

That looks like re-purposed Purple Jesus after a frat party circa 1969. Yeast in a wheat beer is one thing, but those chunks just ain't right....

I'll eat or drink nearly anything, but I don't think I'd drink that. What did they say when they gave it to you? I can't imagine nobody noticing

Well, if it's yeast then it shouldn't be harmful, right? I have another bottle in the fridge for tonight, and plan to strain the chunks out. Never had any problem drinking some before noticing last time, and after straining it then it seemed fine. Hate to drain-pour a $12 beer if it tastes fine and isn't harmful. I have one more in the cellar.

You’ll be fine, even if you do or don’t strain the chunks.
