I cannot stand IPAs with alot of Simcoe Hops, to me they smell like cat pee. Same with Citra Hops; they smell like weeds or Vick's Vapo-Rub. A small amount of Citra seems to be nice as one of my favorite beers- Naragansett Summer Ale has a small amount but in abundance, like in Citra Dog IPA they are not appealing.

Anyone else feel this way? What other Hops varieties turn you off?

All Simcoe or all Moasic doesn't work for me either, they're best blended. I love all Citra hop brews, I get no off flavor as long as they're really fresh, Citra IMO doesn't age all that well.

I would consider myself lucky if I could avoid beers heavily hopped with Summit for the rest of my beer drinking career. Onion/garlic pairs with pizza, not beer. I also don't specifically dislike Centennial, but I find single-hop Centennial beers extremely mediocre (Founders, Two Hearted)

I thought Two Hearted was bland. After trying one, I thought 'What's the hype about?'.

I never like Columbus hops, coming to really like centennial and simcoe when blended

I think one can quickly become bored with certain American hops. Recently I've been drinking beer made with British hops; even when heavily used they work fantastically well with the malt. I do think Citra hops are best in moderation. I'm sick of beer that tastes like grapefruit or tropical fruit, it seems like these have been made for people who don't like the taste of beer.

That's a shame. Perhaps the single-hopped beers you've had don't showcase the hop properly. I personally really enjoy Citra and Mosaic hops - some of my favorite beers are PsuedoSue, Pompeii, and Todd the Axeman.

Agreed. English Hops are 'earthier' and more complex.

It appears that the compound of 4MMP does not agree with your palate.

Below are some of my previous posts concerning 4MMP:

“Both Simcoe and Citra are high in a compound referred to as 4MMP. Different people will perceive 4MMP differently. There seems to be a genetic component in this as studies indicate that a higher percentage of women will perceive 4MMP as cat pee vs. men.

    For my palate:

    • Simcoe = piney
    • Citra = tropical fruits”
    And:

“4MMP (4-mercapto-4-methylpentan-2-one): each individual will likely perceive this compound differently. 4MMP has flavors of tropical fruit for my palate. Others have reported an aroma/flavor of cat pee. Also, muscat grape/black currant has been mentioned. Another descriptor mentioned is boxwood.”

    Cheers!

Thank you for this. A friend of mine is crazy about Simtra brewed by Knee Deep and when I mentioned cat pee he thought I was crazy.

    Appreciate your post

Nope, love both. The only hop flavors I like to see in check are those which give off onion/scallion - which I don't mind, so as long as they do not overthrow the hop profile. Citra and Simcoe, more please

I find it hard to drink centennial. It just smells like dirty feet to me, and doesn't taste much better

Not trying to discredit anyone's perception of any hop, but I do think it's important to note that hop flavors do vary from crop to crop, as well as how they are used in a beer. I feel like the perception of hop flavor depends a lot on what else is going on in the beer, be it other hops, yeast, malt bill, and when they are added to the beer. I've had citra beers that were in your face funky overripe passion fruit and others that were pleasantly citrusy and tropical. I've also had mosaic beers that ranged from pleasant tropical fruit and blueberry to straight up wild onion/spring garlic.

you are not having the right simcoe or citra beers then.. Hops are delicate and some brewers do not know what they are doing.. I could name 15 citra beers that are epic
