Tuscaloosa or Birmingham?

I'm going to be driving down to Tuscaloosa next week and was hoping to pick up Ballast Point Sculpin (preferably in cans) and Cigar City Jai Alai. I know there is a store in Tuscaloosa called Spirits that had on their Twitter recently that Jai Alai was back in stock. From what I've read on these boards, it also sounds like I definitely need to pick up some of the beers made by The Good People as well.

    A couple of quick questions:

    - Is Jai Alai pretty scarce down there or does it just come and go from time to time?

    - Has anyone spotted Sculpin in cans or is it pretty much bottles only in AL?

    - Would it be worth taking a slight detour and stopping at Hop City in Birmingham on the way?

    - The wife also wants me to pick up some Yuengling for her, I'm assuming that will be relatively easy to find?

    Thanks in advance!

Don't know about Jai Alai, and I've only ever seen the Sculpin in bottles, but it seems to be readily available.

Spirits is the best place to buy bottles it Tuscaloosa, typically a buck or two cheaper than anywhere else. They had Sculpin as of the last time I was there (Monday or Tuesday). They also have a great selection of singles, if you want to try a bunch of local stuff. I'd recommend Good People's IPA and Monkeynaut from Straight to Ale.

Haven't been to Hop City but, I've heard good things.

Also if you are wanting to get anything on draft I would recommend Loosa Brews. They have 60+ taps about half of which are either local or Alabama breweries.

Finally I haven't ever bought Yuengling down here but I'm pretty sure I've seen it at target, so I'd assume you could get your hands on it pretty easy.

Thanks for the reply! I think the Sculpin cans have only been out for about a month or so, but I wasn't sure if they'd made it to AL yet.

I'm assuming the location on Rice Mine Rd is the better once since it's larger?

That's good to know. I definitely want to try some of the local AL beers!

That sounds intriguing. I'll definitely try and check it out.

That's what I was hoping for. The wife will be happy.

    Thanks again for the info.

Yup it's a bit out of the way at least for me but is generally worth it. Real nice people there to.

Also should have mentioned that Loosa Brews sells 6 packs as well. Usually about a buck more then Spirits, but it's really convenient to the university/my apartment and it's nice to grab a draft then a 6 pack to go.

I have no specific answers for Tuscaloosa, but in Huntsville:

-Jai Alai just came back. It comes and goes, but is pretty easy to find right now (I bought some at Sprouts last week)
-The craft beer store where I worked always carried Sculpin in cans (when available from the distributor).
-Hop City is worth the side trip
-Yuengling is easy to find at Publix/Kroger/Target

Also, Good People's IPA and Snake Handler (DIPA) are fabulous.

Off the top of my head, Sculpin was available in cans at Hop City in Birmingham last time I checked. Jai Alai was recently as well - not sure the status today.
    Cheers!

Thanks everyone! I think I'll make a quick detour to Hop City in Birmingham in addition to Spirits in Tuscaloosa.

One other question regarding Snake Handler......that one is a seasonal that is already gone, correct?

You might find SH in odd areas, but it's gone in the bigger stores. Try the Good People Hitchhiker on draft when you go to Hop City. Good stuff.

JA went quick, the Western Supermarket on Highland Ave still has some. We got stuff with a 3/3 date, so it is becoming less and less fresh. Hop City is worth a stop. They have Sculpin in cans all the time and got GF and Hab Sculpin in bottles today.

Snake Handler on draft is year round, they just don't can it often (once a year?). They did a batch in Jan and one in Feb, but I have not seen it since (and it went fast)

If you're making a side trip to Hop City you might as well go to Good People it is just a few blocks away. HopCity can do a growler fill of it for you. If you have any empty growlers bring them with you because as long as they have the government warning on them Hop City can fill any growler. Breweries here can't do growler fills at all.

Don't know if this is too late for you already but I was at Wilhagan's last night (bar in Tuscaloosa) and they had snakehandler on tap.

I got back from my road trip late last night. First off, I want to thank everyone for their advice! It was a huge help.

We left Indy early Wednesday morning and arrived late afternoon. I stopped at Hop City and picked up two 6-packs of Sculpin cans. They were fresh too! They are dated 3/26/15. I was worried about finding it fresh since I've read so many reports from the Eastern half of the country where the Sculpin sits for months and months. Also to my surprise, they were only $13.99 which is less than the $16.99 I've read about in other cities. I also grabbed a 6-pack of the Habanero Sculpin bottles for a friend who loves that stuff.

Hop City is a very cool place.....I wish we had something similar here in Indy. It's a beautiful store with an awesome selection. My 18 year-old daughter was waiting out in the car, so I didn't have the opportunity to have something on tap but they had some great stuff on the menu.

We headed over to Tuscaloosa and checked into the hotel. My daughter took a nap, so I headed over to Spirits on Rice Mine Road. I got a 6-pack of The Good People IPA, a 12-pack of Yuengling and a single bottle of Sierra Nevada Summerfest. Summerfast hasn't been released here yet and I've been wanting to try it so I was happy to find it there.

I was too tired to go out and hit the places you guys mentioned that had great beers on tap. We are going back down in June and I'll have more time on that trip, so I will definitely do that when I return.

My daughter toured the University Of Alabama and has made her decision that she is going there in the fall. Of all the colleges we've toured, it was hands-down the best.

On the drive back home yesterday, I decided to stop once more at Hop City. I picked up 6-packs of Monkeynaught and Terrapin Hopsecutioner. I couldn't find any dates on the Terrapin box anywhere, but I bought it anyway. I opened the box when I got out to the car and found 2/18/15 stamped on the bottoms of the individual cans. They should still be fine at 7 weeks old (I'm not one who is extremely picky about that, but I try to make sure they are under 90 days). I don't know if I just couldn't find it, but I'm surprised that they wouldn't put a date anywhere on the box.

Anyway, we had a great time in Alabama. The people were wonderful, the University was awesome and I look forward to many repeated visits. Thanks again everyone for the help!

Don't sweat the age on cans too much. Cans are like mini kegs so the beer is kept fresher longer than bottles.

True. I think Bill from Sierra Nevada even confirmed that in an old thread here.

I'm heading back down there again next week. Hoping to get an update on a few things:

    1) Is Snake Handler still available on tap at Loosa Brews?

    2) Has Jai Alai or any other Cigar City stuff come back into stock at Hop City, Spirits, etc?

    3) Is there still construction on the freeways near Hop City?

    Thanks everyone!

    3) I didn't notice any construction on the roads & /or interstates in and around hopcity the last time I was there about a month ago.

I'm not in town for the summer so take all of this with a grain of salt.

    1. Lossa has a site up that has a full tap list and from my experience with them I'd say that it is likely very up to date;
    http://www.loosabrews.com/tap-menu/
There's the link, looking over it I didn't see snakehandler.

    2. I don't really know not being there, but the owner of spirits told me that he tries to always keep jai alia in stock and is great about ordering things people want but he doesn't have. I'd recommend giving a call and asking, if he doesn't have some there he might be able to get some in in time.

    3. After driving through Birmingham regularly the past few years, I feel like they just put up orange stuff and never actually do anything.

Once I'm back in town I'd be happy to work IP trades whenever you come down so you don't have to worry about using your time in town looking for beer.
