That's how i did it for years before I moved here, or group buys with other brewers. There is a brewpub here but I don't think their brewery is still local, and I've tried to meet the brewer but in 2 years he's never been around. As soon as the place in Tuscon opens I'll give them a call. But at $80 per pound I can buy beer cheaper.

The best deal going online appears to be ordering 10lb bags from MoreBeer. The 10lb bags are free shipping (for orders over $59) and the sacks aren't, but there's no limit on how many 10lb bags you can get.

The classic example is that you can get 5 x 10lb Viking Pale Ale Malt for $39.95 (80 cents per lb) instead of $73.98 for a 55lb sack ($1.35 per lb) w/ FedEx delivery.

Seems like mostly the Viking malts that are worth it with this particular deal, but I've never used them so I can't comment on quality.

That looks like a good price.

There are 6 lots of Viking Pale for which MoreFlavor provides certificates of analysis (COA). PDF’s for the COA’s can be found under Documents on this MoreBeer page ( < < link). The oldest analysis date is 2018-03-27, and the most recent is 2018-10-03.
Each COA for the different lots indicates a 2017 crop, and states the shelf life is “12 months (from analysis date in dry storage).” So…..for the most recent lot for which a COA is provided on the MoreBeer site ( < < link), the shelf life came and went on 2019-10-03 (assuming dry storage conditions).
I don't know how quickly or to what extent malt would degrade past the mfg's stated shelf life.....anyone here have a clue about that?

That said, there are several good reviews from Nov 2019 to present. And although the 41 reviews are overwhelmingly positive (37 were four stars or better), 7 said it was darker than expected and 4 mentioned lower efficiency (suggesting a need for more in the grain bill).

Seems I remember a BA’er (maybe @JackHorzempa ?) emailing or talking with a MoreBeer rep a while back about the Viking Pale and its low price. IIRC the rep said a customer backed out of a fairly large buy, and MoreBeer opted to offer it at retail for a substantial discount.
MoreBeer currently lists 16 different Viking malts. Although I don’t remember how many they had when I first became aware of the low price, I think it was considerably less than 16.

Yup, I spoke to the President of More Beer (Chris Graham) at HomebrewCon 2019 on a number of topics with one topic being Viking Malt. You remembered the detail correctly: More Beer ordered a large amount of Viking Malt for a commercial brewery that later went out of business. Since they had such a large amount of Viking Malt in their inventory Chris decided to discount it to encourage sales to homebrewers. There was no discussion about the age of the malt.

    Cheers!
