If any of you find that you or your friends are drawn to staring at a TV rather than conversing while out at a bar, then either you have attention span issues, or perhaps you aren't as interesting as you think you are.

I prefer a bar to have a television. There are a couple of bars I like with no televisions I just don't go there when I'm looking to watch o game or the like.

You don't sketch or read at home?

How are the people going to know what I like to read and know that I'm an artist if I don't do it in public?

    A curiously passive-aggresive response.

I meant: the number of positive reponses here explains why there are so many TV's in bars. Lots of people like it.

Screen culture is a big part of American life as are sports and sports bars. I have no problem with TV in bars in the States especially if I can watch a Bruins or Packers game while having a decent beer. But it's a different thing altogether in Germany, England, Scotland and Belgium.

Extroverts think everyone likes to be social, i.e., introversion is a mental disorder. I like watching the game at the bar sometimes (and I don't need the sound to be on --- I'm savvy that way --- I can follow the action without be told what's happening). What really annoys me is someone trying to talk to me when I'm obviously sitting by myself. If I wanted company, I would have come with someone. Geesh.

What really, really annoys me are those craft beer bars without TVs, which are places that gives the extroverted beer geek the license to turn his attention to me and start expounding on the hop profile of the beer he's drinking and how that beer is like or not like the beer he had at some other craft beer bar without a TV. If some stranger starts asking me tons of questions about the beer I'm drinking, I'm likely to want to strangle that person.

    This x 10. You're not alone.
I'm baffled there are bar owners (let alone beer bar owners) who think having some bullshit local band is supposed to make me want to go there. And I'm baffled if anyone enjoys it, which apparently plenty do. Do bar owners really think not being able to talk to the people you're with is a selling point??

I'd take 50 TVs at normal volume rather than a band playing...and this comes from an enormous music fan.

I hear that the man from Mars won't eat up bars when the TV's on . . . really!

Sorry, just expanding on what i assumed you were pointing to, American like sports and like watching them at bars....where the beer is good. There are some times of the year when sports are not as plentiful on TV but seasons like now are busy sports wise.

I can help you out there. Hipsters come in two varieties. The first is a thirtysomething drinking a Pliny and feeling superior to you because he makes more money than you do and has the inside track on impossible-to-get concert tickets. The second is a thirtysomething drinking a PBR and feeling superior to you because he makes less money than you do and knows someone who knows someone in an indie band that no one's ever heard of.

As a bartender I feel it helps the people who came in by themselves. I engage people who seem to be sitting alone, but on a busy night I just don't have time for them. TV prolongs their stay

Yes, I know the stereotypes people spew. You have said nothing new, and continue to prove that a lot of people like to put others in clicks just because some feel superior to the other for some reason. Usually a stupid one, like judging people on what they drink, how they dress, or how they spend their money, and nothing else.

I think an important distinction is the need for more non-sports style bars without TVs or who don't play sports. You can go to several within a 2 mile radius, but it's alot harder to fan one without fans of whatever team, unnecessarily hooting and hollering about whatever is happening.

And this is coming from a sports fan.

this is the beauty of having so many bars
you want a bar with a great selection that is loud and has a million TVs? there's one for you
you want a bar with a great selection that has no tv....check
you want a place that smells like piss and only serves bud light? you're in luck
you want an uber fancy spot with overpriced wings and $7 miller lite....we got you covered

instead of everyone bitching at each other in this thread, why not just stick to the places you've been sticking to and let everyone else be.

personally, I like sports on at the bar....why not?

Burying your face in a magazine, book, or sketch pad: acceptable

Sitting down for a pint on your way home from work, and watching a few minutes of ESPN: unacceptable
