My GF and I went to Twenty Tap last weekend and it was probably the most disappointing place I have been to. I've always heard people complain about places with dirty tap lines and I have to imagine that's what is going on there. They had just tapped Permanent Funeral so I was excited about that. I have had PF a lot and this had no aroma and none of the taste that makes this one of my favorite IPAs. My GF got a 3 beer flight. First up was Daredevil Slip Stream. I recently had that at the brewery and gave it a solid 4. What we had was undrinkable. Secondly we had Schlafly T-IPA and again it was barely drinkable. I can't remember what her 3rd beer was but it didn't get finished either. To have 3 beers that I love be basically undrinkable I have to put that on the establishment. Anyone else have similar issues there?
I've never had any problems there. I'd consider this experience an outlier...but certainly something that you should let them know about because I'm sure that they would want to know....
I have never had any issues with dirty taps lines there, but like @myersk27 said, let them know what is going on.
Accusing a place of dirty tap lines is a pretty serious allegation, and as you can see from the first response, it turns people away. This might seem crazy, but did you say anything to anyone at the bar?
I bet Kevin would flip if any beer showed that in his place. I eat and drink there one a month at least. I've never had an issue with any beer before. Industry folks drink there, a lot. This is the last place in town that would ever have dirty tap lines.
That's the thing. I would have to know what a beer thru a dirty tap line tastes like to have a reference point. With Permanent Funeral I was kind of suspicious that maybe I had one of the first pours and it wasn't 100% PF. The Slip Stream and the T-IPA were just awful. The did not taste like old beer and by that I mean malt bombs. We weren't at the bar and our orders were dropped by other people so I didn't say anything to anyone. Honestly whenever I have questioned something like this anywhere in the past it turns into a fight that's not worth getting into.
Hey @fredmugs thanks for posting the feedback. The owners take their beer very seriously so I am sure they would want to hear if you had a poor experience. Line cleaning and glassware cleaning are a critical part in making sure the craft beer (or any beer) tastes great. I will pass thing directly to Kevin the owner when I talk to him next. The reality is that we see almost every location have an issue with a line from time to time because line cleaning is done by people and people sometimes make mistakes or errors. Also, always mention if you have an "off" beer to the wait staff as it's the only way for them to check things out. The 20 Tap staff is top notch. We hope your next Daredevil beer is a good one, cheers!
20 tap is one of my favs. I have never had an off beer there. They are a tap room for beer lovers ran by beer lovers. I am sure this is a one time issue. Please let them know and give them another chance.
I regularly go to Indy and always hit Twenty Tap. I have never had a bad experience. The beer has always been delivered to me in well cared for condition.
Only once have I had an issue there. During the KBS release, my husband ordered a backwoods bastard and it tasted oddly of a pumpkin beer. After passing it around to our friends to verify, we stopped the bartender to tell her. For the life of all of us we couldn't figure out what happened, because there was no pumpkin beer on tap (it was spring!). They immediately replaced it, didn't charge us for it and apoligized. They definitely handle issues with aplomb and I wouldn't hesitate to go back. Great staff, great beer and awesome food.
I'll echo what others have said, I drink there pretty regularly and have never had an issue. Sounds like you got stuck with a one-off bad experience (which, of course, still sucks).
I'm going to echo the sentiments of others and say it was just an off night or something. My wife and I were just there on Saturday night and the food and drinks were delicious as always. It's one of our Indy favorites! Cheers!
