Will be here for eight days at the end of this month. Staying in downtown Minneapolis but plan to spend a day or two in St. Paul. I put the guide below together using combined RB/BA place scores and plan on hitting many of these spots. Just wondering if there are any glaring omissions that are worth visiting (I'm aware that the original Surly is outside the city). Also seeking advice on "must-see" tourist attractions. Among breweries, I really like what Venn and Finnegans are doing in Minneapolis and what Waldmann, Bang, 12welve Eyes, and Birch's Lowertown are doing in St. Paul. Those would be my top four recommendations in St. Paul, in fact, in that order; Waldmann and Bang have unique venues and great beer and constitute two of my top three overall recommendations to visitors (along with Surly) in part because of those great venues. I'd put all of those breweries above around half of the breweries on the list you generated. Scott's in St. Paul is one of my favorite hidden gem liquor stores, although the other places you've listed should suit you fine.

"Tourist attractions:" I recommend walking by USBank Stadium, checking out the Guthrie Theater (for the architecture; no need to see a show), past the Mill Ruins, over the Stone Arch Bridge (with views of St. Anthony Falls), and down St. Anthony Main on the other side of the Mississippi River. That'll give you some great views of the city in just a couple miles of walking. Definitely catch a Twins game if only for Target Field, maybe the best stadium in baseball (and the Twins are looking pretty good this year; knock on wood). If you're into music, see a show at First Avenue, which is a rare legendary music venue that lives up to its reputation.

I agree on the Waldmann it is right behind Bad Weather. Another brewery to check as far as great beer and atmosphere (you can take the light rail from Surly ) Bang in St. Paul there is also Urban Growler across the parking lot. As far as attractions you should do a jucy lucy comparison with Matt's Bar, the nook, and/or 5-8 club

If you have an affinity for beers with smoke, and for heavy metal, look to visit Hammerheart Brewing in Lino Lakes (about twenty minutes north of downtown Minneapolis and right off I-35). If you can't swing getting to the brewery, France 44 (along with other bottle shops) carries a good selection of Hammerheart bottles (a lot of the Hammerheart bottles are 500ml now). Republic is known to offer Hammerheart beers on tap.

Thanks everyone. All great suggestions so far. Particularly appreciate the tips on attractions and the St. Paul breweries I hadn't heard of.

dbhammel: speaking in very general terms I enjoy hoppy, dark, and sour beers. Usually go for mid-strength or low alcohol stuff since I like to have a few in a session. Also dig a well-made lager (pilsner, bock, helles, dark/black lager). I don't normally seek out imperial stouts, barleywines, etc unless I'm at a tasting with friends and can share things. Any brewery that makes a killer WC IPA, robust porter, sour or saison, and hoppy pils is good in my books.

The suggestions above have all been great. For your interests I'd highlight Fair State, Venn, and Indeed for taprooms. I think you'd especially like Fair State. Blackstack, Barrel Thoery, and Wild Mind are all very popular but they generally feature more of the NE IPA, pastry stout, and fruited kettle sour beer styles, with the exception of Wild Mind which also does a lot of mixed culture sours and more traditional saisons.

That is correct. But a longish Uber/Lyft ride somewhere is not out of the question if a place is worthwhile.

I should also note that for four of the days I will be at a work conference staying downtown and will only have time to hit 1-2 places at night (most likely in the downtown area or close by). Will have more time to explore on the four other days.

RE: HopCat. Most of the beers on that list are right up my alley, and I won't rule out a visit. But I've been to the HopCats in Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, and Detroit and was hoping to explore places local to the Twin Cities. Will keep it in mind, though.

I doubt you'll find a sour or saison but for most classic styles done really really well with easy access from downtown, it would be hard to beat the Town Hall west bank location. I know you said you prefer to stay away from high ABV beers but if you are going to indulge in a stronger beer or two while in MN you won't find many better than the barrel aged beers at Town Hall if you are lucky enough to find one on tap.

There are plenty of craft Pilsners brewed in MN. Summit, Schell Keller Pils and Fair State are some of the better ones, you can find these in bottle/can shops and on tap in bars. I would give Summit Keller Pils and dakota soul a try some time before you leave. Waldmann Pils is good too but not really hoppy IMO.

Awesome. You guys have been a great help. I see Town Hall is only a 10 minute drive from my hotel and it's very highly rated so it is definitely on the hit list. Will keep an eye out for the barrel aged beers. Thanks for the pils recs cheesehead.

Go to town hall and republic. Republic had a ton on local beers on tap. They're right across the street from each other and in the corner of downtown Minneapolis.

Town Hall Brewery always has at least one of their barrel aged beers on tap now. Pretty sure the same applies to the other locations too (Town Hall Lanes, Town Hall Tap, Town Hall Station)

Another brewery and tap room not yet mentioned that is right downtown in Minneapolis is Finnegans (https://finnegans.org/). This is one of the newer taprooms downtown, even though the brewery name has been around for quite a while. Decent selection, decent beer, and very stylish room and patio.

Also visiting the twin cities soon, this thread has been awesome! Thanks! Got a good list of breweries to check out, so what are some breweries not from the twin cities that get distro that I should keep an eye out for? Heard Drekker and Lupulin are great
