My (soon to be) father-in-law and I recently got into home brewing (made our first batch back in late November). I'm getting married in June and he's essentially decided to give me a case of homebrew for the honeymoon week, and that he'd let me pick what I wanted to do. I did some research and came across a Pliny the Elder and a Two Hearted clone. Since I've never seen either of those sold around here (I live in Arkansas), and because I've heard great things about both, I decided one of those two would be my "Wedding Present/Honeymoon" gift.

Right now we don't really have the equipment for an all-grain brew, so it has to be an extract kit. My question is this: has anyone done an extract kit for either/both of those clones? And if so, how did you like it? Is it worth the time?

Northern Brewer has their Plinian Legacy kit. I've seen clones for both of those come up in threads. A quick search may heir some good results.

The nice thing about the two hearted clone is you don't have to buy a kit as it might be cheaper to buy the ingredients separately. Very simple ingredient list.

There's a Pliny recipie Vinny himself published and it includes conversion for extract. It does include steeping grains (simple enough) but the hop schedule it's pretty involved especially the dry hopping. Not overly difficult but may be more than you want to get into if your still new to the hobby. I think the Two Hearted would be much simpler since it's a single hop beer.

Let me know and I'll dig out the Pliny recipe.

I don't mind dry hopping and a more rigorous hopping schedule. In fact, I was talking about it with my father-in-law last weekend about wanting to maybe give it a shot for this particular brew since we'll have about 7 or 8 brews under our belt by then. I wouldn't mind seeing the recipe if you can find it.

The Pliny recipe provided by RR in the link above makes a very good beer that tastes similar to Pliny. However, the current recipe adds Amarillo.

The 3.5oz of Columbus at 90 always seemed insane to me so I used a bittering charge that made sense to me and was pleased with the beer.

My first homebrew was the Two Hearted Clone from Adventures in Homebrewing (AIH). Turned out great! AIH has a number of great clones/recipes that are easy for the novice homebrewer. Best of luck!

Looks like @Erik-P got ya covered. Thanks for that...been away from the laptop for a while today.

Something I will say about the recipe as given is that you may want to hold half the extract for later in the boil. Since longer boils can result in darkening of the extract (you're essentially boiling it twice) you may want to add half at the beginning and half near the end or with 30 minutes left. Your choice. Either way it'll be delicious!!! In fact I've co-oped the extract and grains part to use as my "base" for lots of my IPA's minus the extra sugar and the 90 minute boil. That lets me play with the hops and figure out my favorite combo's.

I love the Two Hearted Ale clone from Northern Brewer. Two Hearted is an easy brew and always worth it. I have not done the Pliney clone yet but I can't wait to try it. As others have said, you can get the ingredients for the Two Hearted Ale clone anywhere. I like NB (have no investment in them) because they have always treated me well. I prefer mine over Bell's but obviously I'm biased.

I just bottled the Pliny extract kit from morebeer.com last weekend. Still bottle conditioning so I can't tell you how good it's going to be, but based on the samples I took before fermentation and after dry hopping, I'd be surprised if it wasn't the best IPA I've done yet.

I've been brewing for about a year and it was a lot of firsts for me: first time I've used that much hops; first time using whole cone hops; first time steeping hops before the boil (which I still don't understand); first time doing a 90 min boil.

The directions are a little confusing though. Part of it says 90 min boil, elsewhere it says 60 mins. And it says to add the corn sugar at the last 10 mins of the boil, but it's kind of hidden and I missed that part till it was too late. Not sure what that would've affected, but I ended up being .005 over the target OG, so I'm happy.

It's a #cryin'shame BA's world-class homebrew forum has never ever had a single solitary thread where the joys of PtE or 2-Headed clones have been addressed b/c had BA's world-class homebrew forum ever had had a single solitary thread where the joys of PtE or 2-Headed clones had been addressed .. then BA's awesome ... some might say 'epic' ... SEARCH utility could have easily satisfied the OP's probing question about the relative joys of PtE and 2-Headed clones.

I'm guessing that's a sarcastic way to tell me, the OP, to just use the search feature, which is fine. I didn't even think about it or consider it when I made the thread...but come on. Really? I started the thread because I figured it'd be the best way to get as close as possible to the exact answers I wanted. I'm aware these are both extremely popular beers which means I'm aware that there's been discussion about their clones on BA before. So if this is a sarcastic way to tell me "use the search feature", I apologize. I'm new to the boards and I'm entering the early stags of the research process for this brew which I plan on doing in a month or two, I got excited, and I wanted to exercise all of my options and starting a new thread on BA seemed like a quick and easy way to get some good feedback and information.

If I'm completely misinterpreting your post then I apologize for being an ass.

Don't apologize. Some people 'round here just don't play well with others.

I don't think it was inappropriate to post this thread. Obviously those beers have been much-discussed here, but the question is specifically about their relative merits in terms of extract clone recipes, which is a query that is unlikely to have been addressed. It is true that more common queries (do I need to do a secondary? how/when should I add coffee?) tend to get a bit repetitive, and so it's good etiquette to run a few searches before posting, but at the end of the day the absolute worst that can happen is there are a few extra posts on the site.

Vinnie said he started adding the Amarillo something like a year after the article. Use a little at the end of boil, and some in the dry hops. There is a good recipe on homebrewtalk that lays out a credible schedule.

Not to mention that a new discussion can bring fresh perspectives, from new people or from people who now have more experience on the topic than before. The way I look at it, if someone posts a question that is duplicating something that's still on the first page, then, okay, C'mon Dude. But otherwise, it's fine.
