Different people have different thresholds. I'm not surprised at all that some people think it's off after 3 weeks.

Really, it's guaranteed to be less hoppy after 3 weeks. Hoppiness monotonically decreases after brewing is finished. The question is just how perceptible it is, and it's not even a little surprising that different people would find the level differently perceptible.

What's funny, is I have had a few bottles and am about 2/3 the way through my keg and I thought that the nose was not nearly great this year as it was last year. Still a great beer, but the nose in particular I thought was lacking this year compared to last years.

Especially in the draft version. Of course we're all different when it comes to all that.

I felt the same way, but I have an unreliable nose so I didn't think much of it.

Agree completely, it's a individual thing, I just differ with those that think a IPA is shot after three weeks. Understanding the dynamics of how hops dissipate over time I still think some folks take it a wee bit over board. Now on the other hand, the way the Stone Ruination 10 faded over time actually took me by surprise, but, that was from my first bottle to my last, which was 4+ weeks later.

    Cheers.....

I am by no means an expert but I think I have a relatively strong pedigree with ipas given I started drinking them back in the early 90s at Pizza port in solana beach and began drinking RR's ipas starting in the late 90s when the RR we all know was only a pipe dream and he was serving his beers at the deli at Korbel winery. I notice a significant difference between a 1 week old Pliny and a month old Pliny. Does it make me the norm. Probably not. But I do make every effort to drink my ipas as fresh as possible and absolutely will not buy any that are not bottle dated unless I am convinced through other means they are fresh.

IMO aroma coma has declined steadily since its release. But it was never as good as a fresh Pliny even on the day it was bottled anyway. The taste never lived up to the aroma. Still better than 75 percent of the ipas out there which is saying something.

While I agree that Aroma Coma is no Pliny, I unfortunately have been let down by the last few bottles of Pliny I have purchased. The aroma was typical Pliny, it was definitely different. The last few I have had have been watery and thin. Kinda bummed me out because Pliny has always been so consistent for me. Makes me wonder if I am on IPA burnout...

Re-arranging my beer fridge/kegerator this morning I noticed I still have 5 bottles of Aroma Coma. I was making room for the Citra and JO bottles I just bought. Damn, I've got some drink to do this weekend.

I have Pliny on tap very often at an Italian supermarket five minutes from my house and fresh bottles as well. I feel like it totally falls behind comparing with Heady Topper or new DIPA from Alpine/Hill Farmstead/Pizza Port/Kern River. I even prefer Hopfather. RR should come up with new DIPA recipe to keep up with the Joneses.

Bought some bottles at the release on the 28th.Only had 2 samples while I was there.Last night I drank 2 of the bombers of Coma.I still have 2 Coma and 2 Prieta.I have to agree that the nose is great and unfortunately while it tastes good it doesn't taste as good as it smells IMHO.But very drinkable. And even though less than 7% it crept up on me. IIRC the Prieta has a more dark or nutty taste or maybe just the taste from different hops.Sorry but I'm not yet able to discern the different hop qualities/flavors.

Had a Pliney at Pangaea a couple weeks ago and honestly I wasn't wowed. It was good but for all that I had heard it wasn't really memorable.Sorry to offend anyone just my .02

There have been a few BA's mentioning off bottles of Pliny...with no E....lately. With all of the new releases recently, it's been quite some time since I've purchased any bottles, so I can't say I've noticed anything off with them. But then again, it could be that it's just not to your taste. No offense taken of course.

Now Pangaea on the other hand, I take offense...ha ha.

The last time I had Pliny was 8/1 bottles on 8/1 and they were fucking sublime. Maybe it's off now, I dunno, but those bottles were liquid gold.

Yeah, it's been too long for me. Looks like I'll have to go pick some bottles up later to see if any fuss should be made.

It was on tap and like I said one man's opinion. Now on the other hand the first beer I tried was a Knee Deep Imperial Red.It was pretty good and I don't usually like reds. Not hoopy or strong enough.Although lately I have become a fan of Knee Deep.

    P-L-I-N-Y.Oops

Totally valid points. I do drink my IPA and DIPA as fresh as humanly possible. Can I detect a slight variation from a one week old Pliny and a three week old Pliny, yes, will enjoy a three week old Pliny, you bet I will.

    Cheers.....

Interesting take, and some pretty heady company, nice leeway eh? Speaking of Heady, I may be one of the very few who just doesnt get the hype. I had a couple super fresh cans this summer and I really enjoyed them, great stuff, but for me, not worthy of the maniacal cult hype associated with it.

    Cheers......

I drank an 8/1 PtE last night and an 8/14 today. No difference. Glad I am not sophisticated!
