I just purchased a house and would like to store my "cellared" beer on some shelving somewhere. The shelving is open and I would prefer not to cover it. I have 2 options and would like advice/opinions on which is best or if it even matters (I know there are differing opinions on what factors matter most and how much).

Option 1 is my preferred location in the finished basement. This seems to be the coolest room in the house and will probably be where I do most of my hanging out. However, because of this, there will be more light exposure. (I could also put the shelf in a closet under the stairs, which is probably the most ideal place, except the closet is open on one side to the furnace, which is about 2 feet away, and I fear that heat from the furnace in the winter will accelerate changes and/or damage the beer.)

Option 2 is in a spare bedroom upstairs. I can close the blinds and the room will be quite dark at all times. The temperature will be a bit warmer than in the basement, but nothing drastic.

So, would a few hours of light (probably 2 to 12 per day depending on the day) in the basement be enough reason to warrant storing the beer in the darker bedroom? Obviously once heating season kicks in I will evaluate the basement closet and see if my suspicions about it being too hot are valid.

    Thanks!
