Since Brews for New Avenues is coming up I wanted to try and connect you all to our mission a bit more. Brews is a lot of fun, but amongst all the amazing beers to consume and lots to bid on I feel the mission of New Avenues is lost at times and am hoping to connect you all, the community, to New Avenues a bit more.

From now until mid August I would like to challenge you all to volunteer to serve breakfast at New Avenues, to get more a sense of who we are serving, the importance of doing this and how you all can help.
Each time you serve breakfast you will be entered into a drawing for an Uli/hertie beer.

Breakfast is at New Avenues on SW 9th ave from 8am - 9:30am.
The following dates are currently available:
    July 3rd
    July 9th
    July 15th

    Please contact me to signup!

    cheers
    Don

Thank god! I didn't want to work next to Andy! Seriously though either day would be fine with me if you want to even things out. And I really don't need much notice so feel free to move me around.

So, the winner is required to open this at brews for new avenues, right?

As the winner sees fit, it will be their beer. Though, PDX opening bottles, olcc and all that...

Maybe not the time or place...? And don't take this the wrong way, b/c I think it's noble what you guys are doing for NAFY, but has there been consideration given to the impact an alcohol focused fundraiser might have on the youth who probably have all been affected negatively by addiction, either directly or indirectly (I'd wager far more have been or are directly affected than the general population)?

We go to great lengths to separate the youth from any drugs. If you follow our FB you will only seen it mentioned as brews for new avenues. We are launching an event site soon.
The importance if the fundraiser, aside from simply raising funds, is exposure to issue at hand which is homeless and at risk youth. Educating the general public, engaging them, and getting people involved is how we, as a community, can tackle the problem and make the community better.
The results NAfY have had are amazing. Through education, counseling, job training etc... We are improving the community and helping the youth become productive members of society.

While there are youth who suffer from drug related problems, there seems to be the assumption that this is why people are homeless. There are an extensive amount that come from abusive backgrounds or have mental health problems or were forced into homelessness because of poverty. That being said, and as I stated earlier, we go to great lengths to keep the youth away from drugs.

The key here is to engage the community, get people involved, and raise some money and a craft beer festival, w music and wonderful food, similar to many other fundraising endeavors, seems to be a great way to accomplish this.

Hope that, while long winded, and typed on my phone on my tram ride home answers your question:slight_smile:

Cheers and hope to see you there

I know that whole HYC does incredible work and I hope you didn't think I was suggesting otherwise.

Yeah, that's not a fair assumption. However, if you take a look at how many of the youth have a problematic relationship with alcohol (and street drugs), the numbers are pretty up there. We're talking about a population that is highly vulnerable to long-term addiction issues, and I was just really wondering if that was ever a part of the conversation considering this is almost an exclusively alcohol "fueled" event. It raises questions for me like: are there posters up for this at NAFY/OI/Janus? Do the youth ever have questions about it and how are they answered? Are the youth that are over 21 invited? Should they be welcome, maybe free of charge? It is after all a fundraiser for programs that benefit them.

And thanks for the invite  I'll consider attending, but would really want to learn more about how it fits in with the NAFY/HYC mission first. I'm not being intentionally adversarial, I have genuine questions that I think are worth asking.

I will try to answer all of your questions and assuage any fears that this is a beer fest with legions of kids playing beer pong. There seems to be some stigma attached to beer festivals, let alone one for charity, would it be questioned by anyone if we were taking about a wine festival? The classic wines auction raises millions each year for multiple youth organizations in pdx, here is a list of their beneficiaries: http://www.classicwinesauction.com/charity_partners/charity_partners.php

I am a bit remiss, perhaps, in not succinctly defining the concept behind Brews for New Avenues and our goals with said event, so please bear with me for a minute.
Events such as the classic wines auction are phenomenal for exposure and are a great help in funding numerous programs to help homeless and at risk youth. However, there seems to be a disconnect between the future generation of supporters and New Avenues. The idea behind Brews was to connect with young professionals and engage them, educate them on the mission of New Avenues and the importance. There are still numerous misconceptions about homelessness, which is not surprising when you even have politicians who perpetuate asinine stereotypes; Reagan was famously quoted as saying "They make it their own choice for staying out there." This, sadly, is a prevailing idea even amongst educated and socially conscious people. Unless one is saying that the youth choose to live on the streets instead of subjecting themselves to an abusive and destructive environment; think of the situation one would have to be in where homelessness becomes the brighter option!

80% of homeless youth report suffering abuse from an adult, a significant number are kicked out of their homes or leave due to these abusive situations. So of course substance abuse is a risk and an issue we must tackle head on!

Educating the community is tantamount to the success of the organization and something we are always striving to improve. Last year we had an exhibit of posters that explained what New Avenues does and how to get involved, along with volunteer signups and board members explaining how volunteers truly help. This drawing is just another push to get the community, in this case the beer community, involved in our mission.

The youth are aware of all the events NAfY puts on, we are not being furtive about a beer event or our involvement in the classic wines auction as this would impugn the intelligence of the youth. We discuss the situations openly, and connect them to the events in various ways. Not by having them/allowing them to attend the event and drink, that would be irresponsible, but in other ways. For example, youth design the tshirts for Brews and print them at our social enterprise INK, we also have had youth who are musically inclined and/or have gone through our music and arts programs perform at events.

With all that in mind, how is what we are doing not fit in with the mission of helping homeless and at-risk youth?

As Nelson Mandela said "Poverty is not an accident [...], it is man-made and can be removed by the actions of human beings."

    cheers
    Don
