Im contemplating a trip to Ulm as a can catch a Saturday to Tuesday flight in a couple of weeks time for £40. Is there much to explore beer wise and is there much to see in the city?
For £40 and if you've never been, why not just up and go -- then you can report back to us! For some reason I thought Beethoven was from Ulm, but I guess not. However, there's this guy Einstein who was born there, might be something interesting concerning his life.
I only know two things about Ulm - (1) their church is supposedly something to see, and (2) it is the last stop on the high-speed train from HD to Munich.
I like Ulm. The cathedral has the tallest church tower in the world. Climb to the top and take some great pics! Beer-wise, take the short walk from Ulm, Baden-Württemberg over the Danube river into Bavaria and visit Brauerei Schlösssle (1690) in Neu Ulm, Bayern. It's about a half-hour walk from the cathedral. Brauerei Schlösssle does some good traditional beers, and they are also trying their hand at American-style craft beers. Good food. Nice restaurant and a nicer beer garden. Attentive owners / employees. A recommended stop for sure. I think the best breweries in the Ulm area are in Ehingen. It's only 30 minutes away by train. There are four breweries in Ehingen (well, three in Ehingen and one in nearby Berg). Ehingen is the self-proclaimed "beer culture city". It's virtually impossible to properly enjoy all of Ehingen's breweries in one day. So I'd highly recommend spending a night in Ehingen. A good choice for a hotel is the Best Western BierKulturHotel Schwanen (across the street from the Schwanen brewery). A couple of links: http://www.schloessle-bier.de/ https://bierkulturstadt.ehingen.de/en/beerculturecity/43-beers-4-breweries/ https://www.bestwestern.com/en_US/b...rkulturhotel-schwanen/propertyCode.95429.html I hope you go. Visit the breweries. And report back with your opinions. I'd be curious to see how you rank the Ehingen breweries. As always, double check the opening times/days for all breweries' taps/restaurants! I've found the breweries' websites to be more reliable than Google or print sources. Prost!
Brilliant stuff, thank you. For that price I couldn’t say no so just need to organise hotels now so thanks for all your valuable information!
Ehingen definately looks like a good place to explore. So far I've just looked at one place, Berg and just the number of biers is good. Very interested in some feedback. @BayernTrips - can you comment on Ehingen https://www.bergbier.de/berg-bier-spezialitaeten.html
Ehingen is a great town for beer - they used to have 5 breweries, but are now down to 4. Berg is the biggest of them and has a lot of distribution in the area, including in Ulm (be sure to visit the Zunfthaus in Ulm!) The second most notable is Schwanen and they have a very nice beer themed Hotel next door. The town has an excellent Tourist Information Center and Rolf Koch speaks great English and is eager to help with ideas and arrangements. Check out the website they put together about their Beer Culture City here: https://bierkulturstadt.ehingen.de/en/beerculturecity/43-beers-4-breweries/ There is frequent rail service between Ulm and Ehingen, so getting there is easy. There are also come other neat attractions to round out your trip, so also check out the Top 10 list of things to do in the area. What's really great is that this little town isn't visited so often by international tourists, so you will likely be received quite well!
Camba is nearish to Ulm and worth the visit in my opinion. They have delicious standards and some craft beers also.
I think you’re mistaken about Camba’s proximity to Ulm. Camba is near the Chiemsee, far to the East of Munich. Ulm is located west of Munich. However, you can try most of their beer at the Tap House in Munich which is easy to reach near Ostbahnhof...
Nein... We visited Camba's Old Factory in Gundelfingen an der Donau several times. It's about 50km (45 min) northeast of Ulm. The last time we visited, it was for a home brewing competition - it was great fun! This guy had created some very delicious beers and I shared one of my last La Cumbre Elevated IPAs with him.
Stimmt, hast du recht! It is still possible to visit their old factory that you mentioned in Gundelfingen an der Donau. (Thursdays - Sundays from 16:00 - 23:00). I thought they were only doing contract brewing there now, but their German website lists lots of events so it could be an interesting stop - thanks for the tip!
They have an outdoor biergarten etc. We usually were there for special events. You can follow the Old Factory on FB: https://www.facebook.com/CambaOldFactory/
