Fun little thread. What are some flavors in beers that on paper sound questionable at the very least, but when you actually taste 'em it works very well. For me, these two come to mind right away. Cat pee and barnyard funk.

Horse blanket, if I ever figure out what that even means.

Burnt and char. Woody (wood-like) too maybe for that matter.

Of course, to some, burnt notes are heavenly. I'm one of those people.

Black licorice. Absolutely disgusting as a candy, but the flavor works well in an imp stout.

I've waiting for someone to actually try horse blanket and start a thread "We were wrong about the horse blanket taste!"

We were actually wrong about horse blanket, we should in fact be calling it *****s blanket. Historically, Belgian prostitutes would turn their tricks in barns, away from the prying eyes of the wives. Occasionally the wife would an make an unannounced trip out to the barn and the prostitute would have to make a quick exit leaving her *****s blanket behind. When the wives would question the *****s blanket the quick thinking husbands would put them at ease by explaining it was a horse blanket and not a *****s blanket. When we think about it a *****s blanket does make more sense, I mean a little dirty and slightly infected?

There is your history lesson for the day.

And then there was the one guy who was actually two deep in a horse, and he really just had no explanation at all. "Yeah, I'm sorry Maude, this is just, uh . . . this just isn't pretty at all."

I get some chocolate roastiness with a nice hop profile, and just a hint of dirty vagina...

Seriously though, I like the topic of this thread. I think some of the descriptors used for some sours fit the bill, what with lactic and acetic acid making beers smell and taste reminiscent to vinegar and sour yogurt.

Sometimes hops smell to me, like a running, organic chemistry lab! Or new electronics!
