Hey, St. Louis BAs, I am in town for 4th of July week. Maybe I’ll see some of you around town. I will definitely be at The Civil Life and Urban Chestnut Grove Beerhall a few times since they are not far from where I’m staying. Looking forward to some St. Louis craft beer! Cheers! Jimbo
Are you going to make your way to Narrow Gauge? It is in North County, a little way from where you are now but very much worth the trip.
I had not planned to, but now I see that Third Wheel in St. Peters is very highly regarded. I also here that Side Project has a bottle release tomorrow. Maybe I’ll go. Jimbo
Narrow Gauge specializes in NEIPA if you like them. They do have a couple non-NEIPA at times. They have many ratings on this site that are pretty dang good. That's for a reason. The place looks like a hole in the wall on the outside on a busy street. Don't let it fool ya. The beer is outstanding and one of the few places in St. Louis (well, I know Florissant) that does create a line when they have a release. They do have a release I am told Saturday morning. Food is above average. It's an Italian place but the menu is more American to me. Try the burgers.
If you don't mind me adding on to this thread @UncleJimbo - I'm headed down to St. Louis for Cubs/Cards at the end of the month and have found great ratings on these breweries: Would anyone be willing to rank them/ advise which to avoid? We're staying in Downtown but plan to see all the sights and my wife loves new brews just as I do so a little trek will not be too hard to persuade: Perennial, Side Project, 4 Hands, Schlafy, Urban Chestnut and the above mentioned Narrow Gauge. We will have our 7 month old son with us for Quality Control so I'm not sure if any of these are to be avoided with a little one. Thanks in advance everyone for your help! Looking forward to visiting a new city. (Also might entice St. Louis locals to chip in their advice - Which BBQ is THE PLACE: Pappys or Sugarfire?!?!) Ching Ching friends!
As far as the breweries you listed, you cannot go wrong with any of them. I would also add Civil Life in there as one not to be missed. As far as the BBQ, if I had to pick, I would choose Bogarts in Soulard. It is along the same lines (same lineage) as Pappy's but I find Bogarts to be just a bit better for my tastes. Pappy's is still great. Sugarfire has been hit and miss with me, personally.
I tend to ignore places where I have to wait in a line. I live here, but I just don't eat BBQ (smoked meat a better term for me) out. I prepare it myself. A smoker, some beer and a nice day out. Pappy's sometimes will run out of product the later in the day you get. This is what I have heard. My favorites are Narrow Gauge, Schlafly (Bottleworks in Maplewood), Civil Life and Modern Brewery. If you like Toppling Goliath, you can get them at Brew Hub. It's the only place in MO where you can get TG. Brew Hub may become a regular stop for me, only hit the place once. I see you are coming from IL. You'll drive pretty close to this place just across the river in IL. I like it a lot. http://recessbrewing.com/ Jon
4 Hands is a great pregame stop. Get your final drink in a plastic cup for the walk to the ballpark. Since you're staying downtown, Hair of the Dog (a bit divey) and Bridge (a bit classy) are the two places with the best beer selection.
