    They are pretty different beers.

Undercover pours a light red and smells close to Lagunitas IPA, Sucks, and Brown Shugga. The smell translates very well to taste, but with a fuller body and a more boozy/vinous bitterness (due to the strength) than the bitterness of a 100 IBU IPA. This gives me a less resiny/long-lasting aftertaste, and more of a palate-cleansing astringent finish.

Hairy Eyeball pours a deep ruby brown and smells of high-boiled malts. Similar to scotch ales/wee-heavies, many old ales, and a main flavor in foreign export stouts. I get lots of dark fruit and caramel. Some roast. Despite being several IBU higher than Undercover, Hairy Eyeball comes off as a fair amout sweeter to me.

Both are worth trying IMO. I agree with Lagunitas description of Undercover being an "Imperial Mild" while I would call Hairy Eyeball a very malty old ale.

    Hope you enjoy!

great beer. better balanced than vast majority of high ABV american beers that aren't stouts. --and the price can't be beat by anyone whose name isn't sierra nevada.

Judging by the smell in the air at the Chicago grand opening party it seems they are staying true to form...

Just another dangerously drinkable heavy hitter from Lagunitas. Oh I forgot to mention at a great price!

I just looked at my RateBeer rankings, and it's just outside my top 10. Fantastic beer, among the many fantastic beers Lagunitas knocks out.

Lagunitas has become one of those breweries that " I must try everything they brew" . . . That being said, has anybody in central Ohio seen this around ?

I've got Brown Shugga, Undercover Investigation and Hairy Eyeball for this weekend. Should be interesting to see how they stack up.

Stash it or add a splash of bourbon...both work well.

Just as we lament the lack of a widely available big beer as a new release to ring in the springtime season change.....Along comes Laggy with the Shut-Down Ale. Hip Hip Hooray x 3.

Just poured my first 2014

*Also, a correction to my last. I was thinking Hairy Eyeball was ~5 IBU higher, but it is Undercover with the slightly higher IBU.*

Boozy right before it goes down but use a frosty tulip glass to cut that down if it bothers you or if you think it affects the taste. Personally I find it easy to drink and mouthfeel is less carbonated. This allows the hops at first to show its flavor similar to maximus and its abv comes thru last. Every year I buy this awesome offering from Lagunitas the brewery that never lets you down ever.
