It's really very simple. I cut out a stencil from some thick adhesive paper. Stuck it on the glass, and lathered on a bunch of etching cream with a popsicle stick. Let it sit for a few minutes, and washed it off. Easy.

Wow, that's awesome. If it's really that easy, I'm doing this for my new brewery that doesn't exist.

I'm curious now, what adhesive paper did you use? Does the etching cream not affect the paper at all or does it depend on the paper? Does the paper stretch at all to accommodate the curvature of the glass?

There is adhesive paper made specifically for glass etching. I don't recall off hand who made it, but it was pretty thick and rubbery. I was able to stretch it out to fit the curvature of the glass, but it took a couple tries before I got it just right.

The rubberiness of the paper prevents the etching cream from affecting it.

Came across a dozen or so thrift store IPA glasses today. They even had three styles. Curious about the history of this style.

The International Union of the United Brewery Workers of America gave out these glasses with their logo for their 33rd Convention in Detroit in 1954.

And Genesee used the style in a 1974 promo pamphlet (apparently aimed a male drinkers - unknown if this was the era when their "secret ingredient" was testosterone).

We have about 8 of those glasses from 1954 Detroit Convention. My Dad worked for Pfeiffers for 17 years, until they closed, and loved that job.
