Imo if you're in SoCal, buy a blank Bruery growler. Flip top and only $10

Clear glass, so the haze can glow.

I use that green Stanley as well. If breweries fill, I'm happy (like Mumford last week). If they don't, their loss. Plenty of beer out there.

In California, if you must only have one, your best bet is a blank stainless steel swing-top. If you can have two, the second should be a blank amber glass screw-top. Between those two you create a venn diagram that covers almost anybody in California who will fill blanks.

Just a couple exits up the 57 to The Bruery  I will probably grab one of these as my glass growler and then look into the insulated stainless ones as a secondary.

Why screw-top for the amber glass one? I have a Sierra Nevada amber glass swing-top from my college days but it has a big label on it so it's just decoration for now.

Ya I have seen the bigger hydro flasks filled with just a small piece of duct tape over the label. But have yet to see, in person, an insulated growler that was made without any sort of branding.

I was speaking of other breweries brands, not the manufacturer brands which don't need to be covered in my expeience.

Found this with a quick googling though.

Obviously you don't live in California. There are different laws. What's the point of your comment?

Because this thread was posted in general chat and mods moved it to here because of what you were talking about.

My comment was in the context of being a secondary growler to a primary swing-top stainless steel – as a standalone, a swing-top glass is quite useful at a lot of places. Most breweries that allow a glass swing-top will allow a stainless swing-top but not always vice-versa, and there are a few breweries that only allow screw-tops.

Basically, think of the amber screw-top as filling in the holes that that stainless swing-top doesn’t fill.

So, caveat, I’m completely making up numbers here, but this is how I think about things:

An amber glass swing-top will cover like 80% of breweries. (Caveat 2: a tall thin-neck design will get filled by fewer breweries.)
A stainless steel swing-top will cover like 90% of breweries.
A stainless steel swing-top + amber glass screw-top will cover like 99% of breweries.
A stainless steel swing-top + amber glass swing-top will cover like 97% of breweries.

Someday I’ll get around to actually manually analyzing the data in my spreadsheet to see if this is an accurate assessment – it’s something I’ve been meaning to do for a while now but just haven’t gotten around to.

The places like bruery who's own growler is swing top, doesn't sell caps for screw top growlers, also the seal for screwtop can be questionable imo.
