Just replaced a Spartansburg poppet with a universal poppet I picked up awhile ago. Anyone used the "universal" poppets before? I have so many different kegs the universals seem like the way to go, but they don't have the "legs"...come to think of it the one I pulled out didn't either Edit: On closer inspection, turns out it was a Cornelius "Super Champion with a Spartansburg lid and slightly different "universal"...I think
I have outfitted 2 kegs with these. They did not leak, but I have not used them enough to form a strong opinion.
I haven't used the universal ones. They look like a PITA, and have heard (again no direct experience) that they can be finicky. I just keep a few of each regular type on hand.
I have used them. One of my kegs was a very old model, and it didn't work. All of the others (3) work fine.
I have a few kegs outfitted with universal poppets. Not sure of the keg brands though. But they work fine, they do fall out upon dis-assembly, but that doesn't bother me. I'd buy more, plus I think they are cheaper then the OEM.
I have used the universal poppets a couple of times. They seem to be a lot stiffer. It feels like I really have to push down on the ball lock to get it to "click". I have not had any problems with leaking.
I use them and have noticed the same thing. It was a problem when I had a stand up kegerator and couldnt push down hard enough when the keg was up higher. I have a keezer now, so that isnt a problem. I wish I had bought more when they sold on ebay for 10 for $25.
