Anybody every take a college brewing course? I don't knowing about brewing, but thought it would be a cool experience. Opinions?
UTSA had a fermentation course at one time. I don't know if they still do. Can't remember if it was graduate or undergrad. I suspect such courses do exist, and I'd love to take one.
The only courses I'm even somewhat familiar with would be the ones UC Davis offers. I've not taken them, though I'd like to. I imagine anyone with an interest in biology, chemistry, and/or engineering would find them really interesting. There is a survey course for non-majors taught by the great Charles Bamforth, an outstanding lecturer with boundless knowledge, and it's a hoot by all accounts. There are upper division courses aimed at people planning on going into brewing as a profession, and the degrees from that program are highly respected. I'd love to take those classes, but they are very hard-science oriented, and I'd have to go back to school just to take some of the prerequisites (chemistry, for example). The university also offers some "UC Extension" courses in brewing that are more geared toward homebrewers. The subject matter seems like it would be pretty basic for somebody who's been all grain brewing for a few years, and they're not cheap, but most people seem to like them, and I might take one someday. Hope this helps.
I know Cornell has a brewing "extension", though I'm not sure how that differs from a course: http://web.foodscience.cornell.edu/siebert/brewing/index.html
Well I will look into it more, I am currently enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering program and the class is listed as a 300 level Chemical Engineering course....
