Hi everyone. I've got my annual family vacation coming up next week. We stay in Corolla on the Outer Banks, so pretty far north. Although I've been into craft beer for several years now, I've never really bothered looking while on vacation in OBX. Probably because most of my family is into macro beers for beach drinking. Anyways, I'd welcome any suggestions. Looking for places with options that aren't available in RI/CT, or just good selections in general. I'd be interested mainly in anything in Duck or Corolla. I recall Harris Teeter having a decent selection, but nothing else really comes to mind. I also checked some of the other threads, but most of them seem to focus further south. On a side note, I did stumble upon this Beer Garden in Corolla a couple years back. Had Bell's Two Hearted on tap for the first (and only) time. Hope to visit it again this trip. Appreciate any input!
There is this in Duck: http://www.sweet-ts-duck.com And this in Kill Devil Hills: http://www.chipswinemarket.com I've only been to the one in Duck, and they have a great selection for somewhere like the OBX. I've never been to the one in Kill Devil Hills, I just did a quick google search and that one popped up. Also, Harris Teeter should have NC selections (e.g. Foothills, Mother Earth, Duck Rabbit, Natty Greene's, Green Man..) There is also a brewery in Kill Devils Hill. I know it's about a 40 minute drive from Corolla to Kill Devil Hills, but it may be worth it. Let me know what you find and get into, I'm going to Corolla in September. Have fun.
Chips and Outer Banks Brewing Station in Kill Devil Hills are both good - Chips has a good selection and a decent selection on the growler bar usually. OB Brewing Station has some pretty good beers and is a nice spot to stop for lunch. This place was just added in Corolla - never been there myself but it might be worth checking out (http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/35525/?view=ratings)
Sweet T's in Duck has a decent selection but everything is priced individually. I did a make your own 6-pack (15% discount) and it came out to something like $26. Granted the beers were all stouts (Bell's Expedition, Founder's Imperial, and Sierra Nevada Rain Check) but the fact that at least the Rain Check was not sold in 4-packs was annoying. They were $3.50 a bottle ($14 for 4), later on I went to Trio and picked up a 4-pack for $11.
I went by Chips in Kill Devil Hills when I was down there in the beginning of June, and I would definitely recommend that as your place to load up for the week. They had knowledgable staff and a pretty good selection. The OBX Brewing Station is also worth a visit. They sell their Lemongrass Wheat in cans now, and it is a great hot summer day beer.
'The Shack' and the 'Crafty Cow Burger Bar' are both in Corolla. Have not been to either yet but they are on my list to check out when we head down in September. 'Sweet T's' and 'Tommy's' in Duck are you best bets in Duck. You can hit 'Chip's' in KDH (or in Moyock on your way in). Trio is also nearby and, IIRC, they have the most taps in the Outer Banks. Outer Banks Brewing is usually very good. If you feel like taking a drive, check out 'Full Moon Cafe' in Manteo; recently began brewing their own brews (mostly in the British styles). Harris Teeter usually has a pretty good selecton of the more mainstream craft brews and local beers.
One more quick question for you NC locals. Any particular breweries/beers that I should keep my eye out for?
