I've already posted before, but the old Walkerville brewery is going to be re-opening under new management. Now there's a video about this news here:

And there's also a new facebook page:

so yeah, I'm not affiliated in any way, I'm just excited.

Yes it is now open for tasting . Only 2 brews right now a Premium lager and a pilsner. Both greats brews and according to Nick the first seasonal brew will be next is going to be a Schwarzbier. Growlers and kegs available.

Had my ticket for early tastings but was across the pond on vacation.
Hit them up last Monday (first day the store was open) and tasted both. Lager was nice and a good amount of maltiness for my buds. The Pils is being tweaked (according to Chris Ryan, co-owner) as its a bit bitter. Very true upon tasting. Grabbed a growler of the Lager.

Much better recipe on the Lager this go 'round for Walkerville.
Not totally sold on their business model. The Lager is a decent flagship, but the plans for seasonal and shorter releases sounds uninspired at this time. These recipes may be more palatable to the general public, but its not what will get craft beer lovers in.

    Exactly!

Kind of boring at this point. Lager and a pilsner... yay. When are you going to make something that I can't get a cheaper and better version of from the lcbo? I don't get why they are moving so slowly.

I don't understand why it's every 2 to 3 months they talk about releasing something new, AND for a limited time.. What about every month?

Maybe I'm spoiled by having visited a bunch of Michigan Craft Breweries, but I feel they should be constantly brewing. They've been talking about re-opening since late 2010/early 2011 I believe, and when they do... 2 beers? Playing it too safe because they are afraid they are going to scare away the macro-drinkers that Windsor is full of. Bad business model indeed for the craft beer game.

What I think would be smart, is get more flavour on the taps asap. Diiversify, and actually make it an opportunity to educate people outside of boring beer. If You Build It, They Will Come.

I could rant about this some more, but what good will that do?

I think one issue they have is they have a single brewer. He may have helpers but he is basically a one man show. The other issue is ownership. Their concern is staying in the black (and I can appreciate that) versus making good beer and doing it for the love of brewing. Make good beer, then money.
At the rate they are at they will end up being a Windsor only beer. Thats what happened to the last Walkerville.

Yeah, I was at the tasting as well. To be honest, I did like both beers, but like you said, they're more approachable styles. Of course, there's a bit more of a market for that sort of thing - the people immediately next to me had the pilsner and thought it was terrible stuff because it was so bitter, and here I was liking that nice bit of bitterness right at the back of it, so I suppose it was a bit of a failure on that regard. To each their own, but obviously, the market in Windsor for a more "BA-centric" type of beer seems minimal. I could see this brewery being somewhat like mill st. on a smaller scale if it could get the marketing right, and while there is stuff I would take sooner than mill st., I have yet to be disappointed by anything they brew.

Mill St. does do good work, but their brewpub in the Toronto distillery district is... well.... Torontofied. Lots of yuppies, lots of mindless Gen Y'ers (or whatever the early 20s are called).
And very few of the waitstaff there know much about their product besides what is on the menu.
But I LOVE the Coffee Porter and just had their Pumpkin. Not bad considering its a witbier.

I enjoy mill st., their tankhouse is pretty good, and I agree with you on the coffee porter. Haven't had their pumpkin, is it a seasonal that's only served on tap or something?

I can understand why you wouldn't like those in their early 20s, I've seen us in groups before, but please keep in mind that some of us are in that age group when you're posting.

Had it last week. VERY nice. A nice compliment to the Lager and great temporary replacement for that Pils that isn't working for them.
