I just got wind of this practice, I got a 12lb package that was listed as 3lbs. I had no idea they didn't verify weight if you print your own label from home. I'm still afraid to go that drastic, but now I round down instead of up like I was doing.

I use fedex only and have never had a problem. Print the label at home and drop it off. Never had anyone question me about anything besides needing a receipt. I even had some breakage once and they repacked it and sent it in it's way.

I just use my bathroom scale. Weigh myself, then pick up the package and weigh again. Easy peasy.

Probably because the wineries have a license and are supposed to mark packages as requiring a signature from someone of age.

Yep - I never use anything but. For the life of me I don't understand why so few people do it. It costs $3. Unless you drive right by a Fedex drop, just think of the time, effort, and gas money you spend dropping off your box. Then with pickup you never have to worry about a nosy driver. It's exactly like delivery, only you leave the box out in the morning and they grab it during the day.

Is it a per package cost or per pick up?

Per box, but they don't seem to always charge it on multiples.

A year ago, I told the young guy at my local Fed Ex that it was beer in box... He said, "You didn't tell me that" and took it anyways. That's how a typical employee would look at the situation, the lady you came across just sucked in general... Guess I didn't realize when I started shipping a year ago that it was illegal.

If I go more than 4 or 5lbs below actual weight, they (Fedex) always re-weigh mine. If I put an odd weight like 13.6 lbs, they usually let it go.

Not really...they're the most careless in every sense of the word. They probably play catch/football with the packages but they'll also deliver them even if its leaking as long as its already close to its destination. I made the mistake of using them once for a big shipment and the guy I sent it to got a freaking plastic bag with the broken beer in it and only one survived. That's just about the only plus I see in using USPS besides it being cheaper...if not every bottle breaks then its not a total loss because they still deliver it.

Depending on the size of the box, it's always guitar parts, a guitar amp, car parts, hot sauce and mustards, or something else that makes no sence to be shipping! LOL! They never question crazy or unusual!!!

    same in Belgium ,

But now we have a new law in Belgium sinds februari ,
All parcels that come into Belgium with a value above 22 € have to pay import tax now , the minimum tax is 35€ that includes customs , they allways open the boxes i've they come from the US , even i've it's marked as a gift and collectible glassware !
    Stupid laws !

    This.

I always drop off at the same location. I never pay beforehand, so they actually have to weigh it any all. The same people are always working. Get to know the people, talk to them a bit, and as lurchingbeast said, make pretend friends. I took them in cookies before. A simple $10 investment in those cookies has made me a favorite customer.

I've had professional movers/shippers tell me they won't ship beer because it's under pressure (even with a no-fault waiver)...but they'll ship wine. :grimacing:

Uh huh...I'm sure the carbonation really presents a hazard.

All depends who you get on the other end of the phone or in person.

Yet another reason the USPS should be privatized (not to mention their recent quarterly $2B shortfall). There is a glimmer of hope though...rumor has it, the USPS is contemplating allowing shipment of alcohol by private citizens, apparently to compete with UPS and FedEx. Can anybody confirm/deny?

I don't think they do it for apartments. Probably the same bullshit reason they refuse to leave packages on my porch.

I haven't heard that one before. The pressure in the bottles would really only matter in an airplane, but carbonated beverages are transported on planes all the time. Even super bubbly champagne.

I was shipping guitar amps (my other hobby is guitar) long before I started shipping beer. Those are always 50-80 pound boxes, so they are used to me showing up with it anyway. With beer, they never ask me what's in the box if it's under $100 declared value.
