this is true. these people want you in their store and aren't going to ever open your package because they want your business and don't want to piss you off. i used to ship with one of these places exclusively. i told the guy straight up it was a bunch of beer, he just laughed and said cool.

I just got a fedex account and shipped this morning. I guessed at the weight. When I got there the woman was really concerned about the condition of the box because it looked like it had been shipped before. She asked what was in it, I said cider, and she became very concerned. I assured here it was in a styrofoam bottle shipper and was like a brick. She ended up taping the crap out of the box. It's funny that she weighed and my estimate was wrong but said nothing about it. Just gave me a receipt and said have a nice day.

I once had a broken box go back to my local UPS Store and got the lecture about shipping alcohol. I knew them well enough though that they don't ask anymore and just mark down collective glassware. Winning!

Sent a few packages off via FedEx yesterday using the online account and self print labels. My "guesses" were a little low, but not outrageous (10 lbs for a 13 pounder, 14 pounds for a 17 pounder). I see today that somewhere along the line they reweighed them and charged me the difference. I just can't catch a break.

Geez they must have a lot of time on their hands to reweigh packages, I mean I can see if it is obvious, like 2lb for a 15lb box....but just shaving a few lbs off....

You can just estimate, and maye drop a pound or two, and they may or may not adjust it in the system. I believe it's common practice to do this and have seen others reference that practice on here.

I have a question for those of you that have accounts with FedEx. Another trader recommended I get an account which I did. I created my shipments through the website, printed the labels, brought the boxes to an authorized fedEx dealer and the boxes are already on their way. Super easy and was a fantastic suggestion.

My question is, when do they bill me? They have my credit card information and all that tied to my account, but where can I see exactly what each box cost me? I just shipped 10 boxes out and had to estimate weights. They corrected most of the weights according to the tracking numbers but I am curious as to where I access my bill, or does it automatically biill me for each individual shipment? Also, do they charge me any fee for being a few pounds off on my estimate? Or do they just charge me what the cost should have been, no questions asked?

Thanks in advanced guys. Really love this site and the last few weeks have been tons of fun. This is a new hobby for me and I am thoroughly enjoying it.

    Cheers,
    Andy

I have a Fedex account. Print the label at home and drop it off at a Mailbox center. You can send Fedex, UPS, etc. there. They don't care & Fedex just picks up whatever packages they have.

I don't know about the last part as far as a fee for the incorrect weight, but you can see the cost of the shipment for what you enter before you print the label. There's a section in the right part called like "Calculate Cost" or something. Just do edit and click calculate.

I always seem to get billed a couple of weeks later. As far as correcting the weight, I've found that it happens mostly when I ask for a receipt with dropoff. I don't really trust dropping it off without a receipt, so I just end up taking the hit. Anecdotally, I'd say that they only charge the difference with no penalty for underestimation.

I always underestimate the weight. Most of the time they just correct it and bill me the difference. A couple times they have let it slide and I made out. I usually shave at least 5 pounds from each one. More if its a heavy box.

They only typically re-weigh if you don't ship ground/home delivery (I use FedEx). At least that is what I have noticed with my boxes, could just be my hub. All my boxes weigh 5 lbs.

They always reweigh at my hub, and I always use home/ground delivery. I also always ask for a receipt, which means each box is put on the scale and scanned in with the correct weight.

I was on vacation in california and well bought a "few" more beers then I could mule home.... Went to a shipping store asked about shipping some things and the guy said just put you beers in these styro shippers they work better less chance of breakage. He knew what I was up to! So I did some more shopping nd sent 14 shippers home the next day he was laughing and asked me "which bottle shop did you got too? I told him and he said well I guess I'm not going there tonight for beer you got it all"

When I got home I sent him a nice thank you box! :-)

This. I see there's a lot of replies, and I'm sure this has already been said. But it's worth saying again. Get an online account, print your own labels, drop off. I've yet to have an issue with shipping over 70 boxes that contained beer. Nobody's ever asked. If they did, or if they heard sloshing* or whatever, I'd use the standard schpeals about BBQ sauce, pickles, "it's nitro-glycerine, just give it a shake, you'll see**" :grimacing: or whatever, but it just hasn't happened yet. For some reason when you drop off they just don't seem to ask, they just weight it, give you a receipt, and move on. I've even launched a preemptive strike with an employee that I regularly see by being friendly and stating that I ship so often because I have an "online business."

*concealing the sloshing prevents this from being an issue of course
**it's modern age America, so the necessary "do not actually do this" disclaimer must be made here for legal purposes

I ship from work so its super easy. Lady in the office prints the label and the UPS man picks it up along with a bunch of other boxes so there's no hassle.
