So I got an email from UPS recently with the following information:
UPS Ground Services will increase an average net 4.9% through a combination of a 5.9% increase in rates and a one percentage point reduction in the UPS Ground fuel surcharge table.
My question is this. Is FedEx going to be the cheaper option for me when shipping packages in your guys experience? I have really only used UPS but if FedEX is going to be a less expensive option for me I will go with them.

I've always found FedEx to be cheaper, at least in my area it is (I don't know how much sway the origin of the package has on price). This is even before the price bump, so my gut is telling me 'Yes'

Who says FedEx isn't going to increase their prices too?

Fedex is already cheaper (and faster) even without a price increase from UPS.

Fedex is noticeably cheaper for most routes regardless of any increases. That said, Fedex is quite likely to raise the same 5% or so.
