Just dropped off a package this morning via usps, they said there is no tracking number provided with this type of shipping. What gives? Is this normal sometimes? How can I see its progress then to make sure it's not stuck in customs or somewhere?

You use the customs number. It isn't fully detailed, but it will give you updates.

Postal folks seem reluctant for some reason to let you know that your package can be tracked to some extent via the customs #.

It doesn't get detailed location info but at least let's you know if the package is in transit or is getting skunked in some country's customs office.
