Hello everyone and anyone from Utah or planning on being in Utah. Our DABC sucks, but it also offers us a potentially special opportunity. We can special order beers through the DABC, which might enable us to get especially fun beers. However, if I am correct with every special order placed, one must order a full case. I am wondering: A.) Does anyone have experience with this, and if so can you share insight into getting somewhat rare beers. B.) Would anyone be willing to share a special order case (share both cost and beer of course)? Just as a kicker. I know that the DABC lists Cantillon beers on their list. I'd love to get a few bottles of Cantillon legally and at wholesale price in Utah if that is even a slight possibility. Any help would be great.
If the person is in Utah, it wouldn't matter what he does with it after he got the case of Cantillon would it? Although posting it on a public bulletin board is probably not the best idea. May want to BM the OP if interested.
...there is no 'after he got the case of Cantillon' via the DABC for Utah residents. like i said, although Cantillon is on their list almost monthly, the DABC will not fill that request. maybe you want to BM the OP if interested.
Well there's that... my point was just it wouldn't matter what he did with "said" case of beer after he got it via the DABC would it? (I'm just asking as I've never dealt with them before)
Typically the DABC will not special order beer unless it is already listed for special order or unless they have a known source for that particular brand, such a wholesaler or distributor. Further, there has to be a willing seller. Many craft breweries don't want to mess with one off, small orders, although there are exceptions. (Some brewers, such as Stone, flat our refuse to send anything to Utah because of the DABC's lack of refrigerated storage). You will find some one off stuff at places like the Beerhive, The Bayou and Beer Bar that have been special ordered and aren't necessarily listed with DABC. A lot of times these deals are the result of a relationship the retailer has with a particular brewer that they work through the DABC. Cheers
I do special orders all the time for where I work downtown. Easiest way is through a rep that can push the order but that can be difficult to impossible unless you're in the industry and buying for a restaurant or bar. They really don't care to deal with the average consumer getting one case of something because the profit for them is minimal. If you submit an order for 20 cases they'll do what they can to get it because they'll actually make a decent profit off of it. The one time I was successful was for myself was with Firestone Walker's Stickee Monkee. I can only imagine something like that being much easier since I basically "piggybacked" on special orders from Beerhive, Beer Bar, etc. I put an order in for FW XVIII and various Cantillon and was unsuccessful. I did get an email from Penny, who is in charge of special orders, saying that Cantillon is highly allocated thus not available to the public as of right now. I have another order in for Parabola and will report back with what happens with that when it's released. If you were looking to do a special order, let me know. Depending on what you're wanting to get I might be interested in splitting a case.
They will be changing their service to a prepay system in March I believe. Not sure how that will change the likelihood of getting something for yourself. Also, they're quite backed up right now so you might want to get those in ASAP.
I was able to order a case of Cantillon Iris in the Fall of 2013 shortly after moving to Utah. I picked it up at the DABC store in the Avenues, they were confused why I was spending $130 on a case of beer (six 750 ml bottles). Penny who in charge of orders basically said it was a fluke and that they had extra to send and it came in with a larger order. I have tried to order some other cases of Cantillon since then but no luck.
I believe I ordered it in July or August of 2013 and if I recall it came a few months later. I actually thought the order had been canceled and was pleasantly surprised when the store called to tell me to come pick it up.
I have never done this before, nor had I tried a loon. Maybe I will give this a shot. Perhaps for Cantilon Rose.
